Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen and if so what is it all about, and what (if anything) can I do. My son (13 mo) has recently begun inserting several fingers at a time into his mouth to the point of gagging mildly. He also covers his mouth with his whole fist or arm and coughs too. He hasn't actually gag, gagged, or thrown up, but it's enough to concern his mommy and me. I kind of assume it's teething as he has at least one bicuspid that's broken through the gumline. He has a total of 9 or 10 teeth and the back ones are the most recent (obviously). Is anyone else dealing with this and what advice or suggestions do you have? |

My son is doing that too he's only 9 1/2 months. He has been teething he just got his third tooth in and I looked again & 3 more are trying to come through too. I just take his hand out of his mouth & say don't do that. It sounds silly but really what can I do except strap his arms down & that isn't going to happen. |

Kristen,
I agree. There's not much we can do really. I guess it's just a strange thing to see a little one doing. I don't mind as long as I can be assured it's not hurting him in some way, or developing a bad habit. Besides, they'd find a way to get their hands unstrapped anyway at this age. (little houdini) |

My son has been doing that too and I've been disturbed by it. I couldn't understand what is prompting himself to sick his finger in his mouth and makes himself gag. Also, he digs his fingers into his ear and rotates them, which bothers me. It must be a teething thing. |

My son has been doing this for about 3 months now,a friend of mine said her daughter did the same thing and the local Mommy group I meet up with once a month they said their children did it to and it is because they are teething. You shouldn't let it irritate,or bother you because if it was painful to you you would be trying anything to help sooth the pain they can't help it they are just babies.I'm not saying this to be mean but just so that may be if you try to put your self into their place. The ear thing as well is a sign of getting another tooth,my sons rubbing his ear alot as well and I know his front teeth are trying to come in as the front right side his gums are swolen and I think one of the bottoms beside both his bottom front theeth are trying to come in as wel I really can't tell though, he wont really let me look. |

I'm just concerned because when he digs his fingers in his ear during feeding, he may get ear infection. He tries to take the spoon away from me and get food all over his hands and fingers. I do my best to clean it off, but he is so fast. In addition, he digs his ears so hard, it often bleed. I don't know what to do about that. I file his nails but he still attempt to make his ears bleed. |

Have you tried to clip his nails sometimes they need clipping and not filing. It was hard for us at first to clip Malik's but it has gotten easier that may help with the bleeding part.My son also grabs the spoon at times I pull it away and tell him no no,and he can have it after I'm done then I let him play with my spoon after he is done. O you might try giving him his own spoon to play with when he is eating.and the food part in his ear I wouldn't worry about it if you give him a night time bath every night let him get a lil messy thats part of being a baby, you can always get it off at bath time. |

my daughter (5months) started doing this at about a month ago, it did last very long. maybe 2 or 3 weeks. she still sticks her fingers in her mouth but doesn't gag herself anymore. I attributed it to just finding her mouth and figuring out what it does. He'll stop eventually. I never pulled her hands out and told her no, 4 month olds don't understand no just yet but i think it's just a learning thing i wouldn't worry about it, unless it becomes a serious habit and he is making himself throw up. |

Well, he's still doing it and he's actually made himself upchuck a bit on 2 occasions. I do belive it's teething because he's like on a marathon with his teeth. He's got 12 now. And when this behavior is accompanied by an excessive amount of slobber and some bad attitude, there's really no doubt what it is. Again I just don't want him to hurt himself. |
