My 8 months is going through a phase that he is refusing to be hand fed. He wants to feed himself. I don't mind having him practice, but the food I serve is pureed baby food from a jar. Even stage 3 are very messy. When he takes the spoon away from me, he gets the food all over his face, clothes, and hair. He also learned how to take his bib off, so whenever he protest about me feeding him, he will take his bib off and refuse to eat unless he can feed himself.
My question is what kind of finger food can I feed him that is not too slippery to grab. I'm always afraid of chocking; therefore has always been reserved giving him finger food. It looks like I may not have any choice anymore. Also his pedi said no salt and sugar.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. |

At his age, he can safely eat cheerios or the gerber puffs. You could also try cooked peas, carrots, pasta, small pieces of soft fruits like bananas or canned peaches and pears with no sugar added.
Just give him a little bit to feed himself, and maybe that will be enough to satisfy him and he will let you feed him. |

I have these rice rusks that my son loves to eat! They are veggie flavored and I got them at Wal-Mart in the baby food aisle next to all the other finger foods for babies. I like them so much because they dissolve and so there is little risk of choking. They are good for babies 4months and up. I also use the Gerber fruit and veggie puffs, which dissolve very easily. Good Luck!! |

Hi Kathy, Emilie does the same thing. I give her a spoon (with no food on it) and I use one to feed her. Sometimes she will keep my spoon in her mouth and I just swich and take hers. She too pulls off her bib, I have managed to get her to wait until she is done eating and then I tell her she can take it off, most days this works. I too use the gerber puffs and crackers, they melt right away in her mouth. I started with the wagon wheels, they are easy to hold and bite into. She still has trouble holding friuts and veggies, but I keep giving them so she will get used to it. I keep a wet washcloth or papertowel near so I can wipe up often. I was thinking too if you have any cloth bibs that have a snap instead of velcro, it would be a little harder for him to take it off. |
