Sure, the language DVD is smart (-ish), but do I really want my little guy staring at a TV for any length of time? No thanks. The first time I saw Baby Einstein was pre-baby, at my girlfriend's house. I was amazed at how mesmerized her one-year old became in front of B.E. DVDs. My very first reaction was "there is something wrong with that"...the catatonic state her son morphed into before my very eyes. Not to mention the super low-budget version of classical music which really irked me (I am a classical musician by trade, so I couldn't help being annoyed by the watered down Casio keyboard versions of those masterpieces). But, at the time I was still baby-free, and tried not to judge. Well, of course we got a couple B.E. DVDS for my baby shower. I tried them out on my then 5-month-old son. Sure enough, it was like magic. Jude was riveted to the TV, listening to the melodies of Mozart, or languages of the world. It freaked me out, quite frankly, because I don't think he blinked, and I had to check to be sure he was breathing. Absolutely riveted. I am not a fan of the almighty TV to begin with, but this was ridiculous. However, if they say it makes him smarter, maybe I was wrong. But no, I trusted my instincts on this one, and decided B.E. was good for one thing. I can put him in front of it when 1. I have to go to the bathroom, or 2. strap him in his carseat (which he normally screams though, but with the magic of B.E....not a peep)! Well, the punchline is the latest report. Putting your baby in front of the T.V. for an hour or more (Baby Einstein, Baby Mozart or Baby CSI) makes babies who know fewer words when they start talking. I knew it! |

I also heard that too much tv can cause ADD. (?) I want to research the subject more. I believe it should be avoided or at least limited. I read one article that states that a child under 2 should not watch tv. However if your going to allow it, it should be limited to 15 mins at a time and only programs that do develope learning. After 2 it's no more than an hour. I believe the site was Babycenter.com Oh, by the way, Hello all I'm new to the group. |

I completely agree. I also heard that they know fewer words. The videos are "suppose" to be used as a learning tool. You're suppose to watch with them and discuss what you see. No thanks! We will stick to reading! |

I am anti-TV anyhoo but I have never seen one of these videos. I just always knew that reading and interacting with me would do my son more than watching cartoons on tv. My husband and I just bought a tv after three years of not having one but my hubby is a tv junkie and he made up for it by buying a GIANT one.
Confession: Although I don't really let my son watch tv, I am a reality show addict but when with my friends I laugh at others who get wound up in them. Not really a bad parenting confession, just my own little secret that I vow my hubby to never spill. |

My kids are almost 6 and I still use TV on specific moment with specific instruction. When they were babies Baby Einstein was great to have time to take a shower. Now Go Diego Go is great as a reward for eating on time.

i know this is an old post but i just wanted to say that i understand what you all are saying. It makes sense and its been proven and all. but my daughter is 9 months old and i let her watch barney ( 's adventure bus - 50 minutes long) about once or twice every morning. she likes it, i get stuff done. i dont see whats so bad about it. i would bet alot that more than half of your parents did the same thing when you were kids and you obviously turned out fine. so what difference is it really going to make if your kids watch tv? i mean i did, and i think that that whole thing about learning less words when they start talking cannot be true all the time, or even most of it. i admire you all for being able to do all that without tv, but honestly i dont think i could do it and keep my sanity. |

Thanks for your reply! My oringinaLpost was from a while ago, and I can give you an update. My son is now 1 1/2 years old, and we stuck to our guns about limiting T.V watching. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people's choice to watch or not to watch. But I am so proud of my son and his language skills. I don't know if it is from more human interaction than TV, but he is quite a talker. As for my own T.V. watching as a child, I wish my parents had limited my TV time. Sure, I am a good person and all that, but I wish I was smarter. Maybe that has nothing to do with TV, maybe it does! |
