My Dr told me after three days is when I should call her. Have you tried moving his legs around in a bicycle like motion, a warm bath might help, when my son got really bad we used a stool softner, for infants, you hold it up there for three minutes and that usual works, but I would ask the Dr before doing that. Hope this helps. Good Luck! |

Hi Mandy, My daughter had really bad constipation until about 4 or 5 months. I would use a little warm water with brown suger, warm water with prune juice, rubbing her belly, warm bath and also just letting her lay on the changing table with her diaper open (me standing with her). I would suggest that you also check with her ped before you give him anything. Please dont wait too long to call, there could be something else going on. My nephew had a hernia at 5 weeks and he was constipated in the begining, he had to have surgery and some intestin removed. |

Prune juice usually always works with my daughter. I gat the Gerber singles Apple Prune. If the juice or warm bath doesnt work I would def. call the ped. I have had to give my daughter stool softners every once in a while. but i would check with her pedi. before doing that.If these things dont work please call the pedi. a week without a bowel movemen tis a long time espec. for an infant. My niece is older she is six but she was so bad cons. she had the air bubbles she she reallynhurt bad, and she was old enough to tell how bad she hurt. |

my daughter was and still is a little constipated. I started out breastfeeding so the dr had me cut dairy out of my diet. that worked for awhile but then she got really bad again so i started her on formula. again it helped for awhile and now she is on enfamil gentlease formula. the dr said that her digestive system is having a difficult time working down the milk protein. maybe this could be your sons case too?? |

My daughter was constipated at 6 weeks old for 4 days and I called her pedi and he said to stick a Q-tip in her bottom and if that didn't work then give her 1 once of prune juice. For my daughter the Q-tip worked, she pooped a few hours later. Hope this helps. Good luck |

my son was also constipated for a few times when he was first born. My Pedi told me to try the bicycle and if that didn't work try putting 1 teaspoon of Karo corn syrup. I never use a teaspoon after the first time because it REALLY cleaned him out. I would say if he was been constipated over a week call your pedi and find out what they suggest. Good luck and I hope he gets better |

our son was a constipated baby and is still every once in a while at almost a year old. Bicycle motion while laying on his back, slightly elevated seemed to help him push through...and helped give me some way to feel like I was helping him. Now that our son is older, we try to remember the 3 P's: Peaches, Pears, and Prunes = Poop :0) Your son is so young, I'd go ahead and call your pedi if you haven't already. Good luck..and you're not alone in this! |

when my daughter was about 5 weeks she went 3 days without a poopy diaper. She was clearly uncomfortable. We tried the warm bath, rolling her legs, baby massage on her belly and none of that worked. Then I put a teaspoon of corn syrup in her bottle and within 30 min she completly cleaned herself out. She had some pretty crazy diapers the rest of the day and she hasn't had the problem since. |

I would just plain call your doctor. They may tell you to do some of these same things, but I think on something like this it's best to just check with your doctor first. Good luck! |

Thanks everybody for the helpful hints! It's good to know that others have had to deal with it. Hearing you tell me to call my pedi gave me the confidence to do so, without worrying that I'm being paranoid. We are using a glycerine suppository today and seeing the doc tomorrow. (I'm going to ask him about the corn syrup - that sounds really interesting!)Thanks again for all the advice! |

Hi! Sorry I didn't get a chance to get back on here sooner...Marta, I hope you will check this because i know you were looking for the follow-up....My dr. said the corn syrup does work - it has to be the dark kind, not the light kind. He said to put about a tablespoon in a 4-5 ounce bottle and that you can do it at each bottle if need be until the bowels resume normal activity. He did say that if there's some other reason for the constipation, like a medicine or an allergy, though, that it would only be a temporary fix, and you'd still have to get to the heart of the problem. It worked for my son really well....we'll see if it lasts! Melissa, thanks for the heads up on the corn syrup - I would never have thought to ask about that! :) |
