Hello all. I am a new member and am wondering about my son and getting him to sleep through the night or at least not wake up so much. He is 5 weeks and I'm wondering if giving him cereal in is last nighttime bottle will really help. Any advice would be great. |

He is too young to start cereal. It is recommended that babies start cereal no earlier than 4 months. Otherwise, he'll develop serious food allergies. My son didn't sleep through the night until he was close to 6 months.
I recall feeding him every 2-3 hours at that age. When I breastfed, he wanted to be fed every 20 minutes.

Hey Eva,
I have a 7 week old baby, and I really wouldn't suggest any cereal in the bottle. That isn't really good for them, but I would suggest trying to give him and extra ounce of formula or something, and see how that works. Fortunately my son is very good about this, but that's what worked with him. Let me know if it works.
Good Luck, J |

Welcome to the group. I think ceereal this early wouldnt be good. But my daughter did start cereal in her bottle at about8 weeks because she had such severe acid reflux but i didnt do it until her pedi said it was o.k.. She didnt develop food alergies. I would maybe try an extra ounce or so, but he is still young and sleeping longer may not come for another month or so. Hope that doesnt bum you. |

I am on board with the others he is too young! I know it looks like there is no light at the end of the tunnel but very few babies sleep through the night at five weeks. I was up every three hours until almost 3 months. Hang in there catch your zzzz's when you can and once you finally hit that 8 hours you will forget how tired you are now. Remember it is normal for your baby to be up eating that means you are doing a good job and your have a healthy son. |

Hello Eva, I had a VERY difficult baby the first 7 weeks of his life. I would agree with the other women that giving cereal is too early at this stage. It's not unusual for babies to get up freqently at night and they do need our help in teaching them how to sleep. A couple of things that I had to ask myself that might work for you are: Is he getting up because he's hungry, wet, overtired/stimulated? Do you rush in to get him as soon as he starts crying? Is he sleeping with you in your bedroom or in his own bedroom. At 5 weeks it's not unusual to get a 4 hr stretch at night, but remember "sleeping through the night" by experts means 6 hrs of sleep. I'm a big beliver in reading and educating myself. Of course there is a book out there for everything and I don't take everything I read as Gospel, but I usually find solace and some good tips in trying to make life a bit easier for myself and my son. A couple of good books are: What to Expect the First Year, Your Baby Week by Week, The Baby Whisperer..the last book deals directly with questions around sleep, eating, etc I've found it quite helpful. |

Thanks all for the reply's. So the next question is, will it get better if he starts sleeping in his room? Or is it just something that he has to develop on his own? |

It will get better as he gets older. You will start to see slight improvements at three months, and it will get much better once he is 6 months.
Some people get lucky and their babies sleep through the night as early as 6 weeks but unfortunately, I am not one of those. :) |
