It could be a test of wills. Is he acting tired? (rubbing eyes, yawning, mood) What happened after your husband took him out? Did he nap at all? (My nephew stopped napping at 18 months) |

He stayed up but started falling over his own two feet so I wound up putting him back in his crib at 2pm and he fell asleep within 10 minutes. Maybe I just have to put him up for a nap later..... |

maybe the video is too stimulating before a nap. Does he like books? My daughter is 12 months and starting to fight the afternoon nap too. I usually let her play a little longer or read a book or two. sometimes it helps but not always. |

Yes, he loves to read so I'll try eliminating the video tomorrow and reading him some books instead. I'll also put him down for his nap at 2 and see how it goes. Thanks for the tips ladies!!!!! |

Hi Denise, It could be a test of wills or he can be starting to phase it out. Mine both did between 18-24 months. But, they would still get an occasional nap depending on what we did that day. Before you totally give it up though I would try putting him down just a little later and see what happens. Well, good luck! |

Your advice worked like a charm ladies!!! I read to Robert for a half hour before nap (&played a couple of games) instead of watching the video. I put him up for his nap at 2 and he fell asleep within 5 minutes. Thanks so much!!!!
PS I hope he naps until he is at least 2yrs old-that's what I did!!! LOL!!!! |

Denise, It sounds like he is ready to drop the pm nap. Mine did the same thing and I am working on moving the remaining nap to the pm. Good news though..now she sleeps from 10:30-1:30 each day. Soon I will move to 11:00, gradually getting to 1:00 by January. If you have trouble with a nap (doesn't matter which one), chances are he is ready for one a day instead of two. |

Sorry, I didn't include in my original post that Robert only takes the one afternoon nap a day (he dropped the morning nap when he was 10 months). He only slept for 45 minutes yesterday and was cranky the rest of the day. I guess this is just another one of those stages that will have to work itself out. |

denise, my daughter did that around 16 months too. She turned two this summer and I have a five year old too... I thought it was teething and I thought oh maybe she is not going to take a nap anymore but I knew she had to have one. You might be putting him down a little late maybe because he is overtired he is having a hard time when my kids get over tired they are brutal and it is so tough to get them to take naps or go to bed.. maybe shorten everything you did in the am ,you have a nice schedule similiar to whar I do.. I did lunch today at 11:50 and put my daughter down around 12:20 and usally she goes down around one but has been kind of fussy and relunctant and the last couple of weeks since my son has been in kindergarten she has been getting up in the morning earlier and going to bed earlier and I had not adjusted her nap until recently what a difference .... when you put them down not over tired but happy they go to sleep so much easier, I know the whole saying of getting really tired really does not work... keep me posted, heidi |

My daughter is 4 and my son is 2. Both need the afternoon nap or they turn into "THINGS" by evening. My daughter started to mess around in bed all naptime and most times woke her brother too early. I used to think that as long as she was resting her body and giving mom her time, I would let her alone. BUT, she OBVIOUSLY needed that afternoon nap, her evening mood made that painfully clear. So, I started sitting in the room with them and rubbing their heads and backs. I find I REALLY enjoy that time with them and it relaxes them as well as me and they both sleep peacefully. On the worst days, it takes 30 mins for them to fall asleep. Most days its 5 mins. It can be a humorous time as well. Little people are so funny when they try to fight a nap. |

Thank you ladies. It turns out that I was putting him down too late in the afternoon and he was overtired. I've been giving him lunch at 12pm and putting him down for his nap by 1:15 every day and he goes to sleep without a problem. He naps for about an hour to an hour and a half. I knew he wasn't ready to give up the nap it was just figuring out the appropriate time to put him down for it that was tricky for me. Thanks again so much for all of your helpful advice!!!! |
