If you were going on vacation, would you allow another teenager (17yrs. old) watch your home and pets? or would you rather pay that extra money and pay a professional?

To me, it would depend on the teenager. If s/he has proven her/himself as being dependable, honest, & responsible, I would. Otherwise, I would have the extra money. |

i would agree it would depend on the teenager. My son has watched his friends dog for 3 summers now when him and his family go out of town for 2 weeks. But, of course no matter how trustworthy the teen may be if you or your spouse is not completely comfortable then by all means get a professional. I would rather have piece of mind then save money. |

I was going to let my friends' daughter 17 year old take care of our home and pets. We had agreed that I would supply the refrid, and freezer with food and soda pop.
When this girl arrived at my home, with her mother, and little sister, she no longer wanted food, but money instead. We needed someone to watch the house Friday, Saturday, and Sunday morning.
The teenager and her mother wanted to receive the amount of money one would receive for doing such a service. In the past, when we would go away, we would never pay anyone cash, it was usually in the form of food.
In the end, we hired a professional for $55.00 and we had a great time and my pets were well taken care of along with the house.
This 17 year old. She has never done this type of work, nor has she ever worked.
How much would you pay a teenager, and would you ask for references?

It depends on the level of care I expect for my pets. If all that is involved is feeding and watering, then I might offer a small amount of cash; if I wanted them to spend a lot of time playing with or loving on the pets, or I wanted them to housesit while caring for the pets I would offer a more generous cash amount, and allow them to use my groceries. I've never had to hire a professional to care for my pets. I would much rather have a person I am familiar with caring for my animals and being in my home than a stranger. |

I have been lucky, my 20 yr old son still lives at home and watches over the place, feeds the fish and dog when I'm not there.
But it wasn't always this way, I have always used my vet who offers boarding. The girls he has there playwith the dogs. He charges by weight. My dog weighs 20lbs. I was paying $5-$6 a day.
I may pay a close friend or relative to house/pet sit. But these days, it would not be a neighborhood kid I didn't really know. |

I would go with a family member (over 18) or a close friend. I have two cats and if I go away I will have someone stay at my house to care for them and the house. I usually offer some cash, but usually as long as there is food and snacks they are ok with it. Most often it is mu mother that does this for me, since she always says she needs a break from her hubby. |
