weaning the night time bottle
My son is almost 8 months old and just cut his first tooth. Also, thanks to all the replies on my "HELP!" post, ive gotten him into a routine and he's sleepin almost all night. However, he still wakes up anywhere between 2 and 6 am for a 4 ounce bottle. not that big of a deal to me. But he cut his first tooth, and i dont want him to have problems with it already!! I was wondering what you guys thought of starting to wean the night time formula bottle to a night time water bottle? like start putting one scoop instead of 2 of formula into his middle of the night bottle, then weanin him to straight water. Thanks for the advice and sorry so long!!

Congratulations on the tooth!

Our son is 9 months and at his check up yesterday his pedi said to eliminate the middle of the night bottle and give him sips of water from a cup instead. Especially since he has teeth so that they don't start decaying. I think if you choose to go to the water bottle, it's fine. Our pedi says that by 6 months babies don't really need the calories at night; they're just looking for Mommy when they wake up.

He should be old enough and weigh enough now to not physically need the bottle. It was an emotional thing for our son...mostly a habit. Does he fall asleep in the middle of drinking or by the end? If so, he's just using it now to soothe him..it's like a tummy alarm clock that goes off. Habits form so quickly at this stage. The good thing is, they can be quickly changed with a little tenacity and patience from you guys. So,whatever you decide to do to help him get away from that night time bottle, do it with consistency and without fear. For us, we switched to just soothing him with a pacifyer. It was a challenge for a few nights, but then he didn't even wake up...he just found his thumb or the paci and went right back to sleep.
Good luck with whatever you decide works for you!

I have a book that would be great for you to read..it saved our lives and it helped us get baby on a schedule and weening him from the bottle. "The Baby Whisperer." The best book I have ever read!!!
