Parents in School
Public online group

Hello Everyone!
Thanks for the invite Vero!
I hadn't been to this site in a few years! Had to update my profile!!
I hadn't thought about a group about College Parents! What a cool idea! We all know it's VERY challenging, especially when you add p/t or f/t work! I've been fortunate to be home with the kids these last 4 years. I am currently majoring in Elementary Education and have only earned about 12 credits so far in my college career! I'm taking 3 classes this semester (Intro to Teaching, Spanish and World Geography). It's my first time trying 3 classes instead of my usual 1 or 2!!!

Can't wait to hear from everyone! I can always use tips on getting all this reading done!!!!

Hi Nashiea,
What part of Mass, are you from? We live in Ct! What made you go all the way to Indiana is it?
When I was studying for my undergrad I was always so overwhelmed with all that reading. But I found that I did better reading the chaper AFTER the lecture (yeah, I know they want you prepared for class). A lot of times the prof just hits on certain topics in the chapter. For me, I not only retained the information better, reading after the lecture, but I only read what the prof went over. It freed up some of my time. Make sense?

Hi Prudence!
I am from Worcester! Right in the middle! My brother-in-law is currently selling his house in CT & moving back to Worcester! He's in the Waterbury area :)

OMG, the reading has me a mess!!!! The teaching class has TWO textbooks requiring me to read chapters in each every week and the Geography class....let's just say the chapter is like 80 pages each week. I'm totally losing my mind!
I wish I could read ahead like you say but my classes are all online and they are specific to the weeks assigned chapters, total bummer! The online classes require SO much participation, it's kind of outrageous at times!!!

Waterbury is ~30-45 minutes away from me. We are actually trying to move ourselves (GA. or SC). It is way to expensive here!! Besides, they know how to eat down South, LOL!!
I am actually taking my grad courses on line--I LOVE IT!! Are you kidding me, no trying to find a parking space, no freezing my butt off hiking to class after I found a parking space... Yeah the participation is a bit much, but sipping on a glass of wine while I'm in "class" makes it more bearable; LOL!
Are you enjoying the geography?! I thought about going back for a teaching degree (elementary, as well), but Ct. is RIDICULOUS! You almost have to give up your 1st born in order to be a teacher! I suppose that is a good thing, in hind sight, but they make you jump through some serious hoops! How about where you live?!

I don't know very much about the teaching requirements/certifications around here in Indiana to be honest! I decided one day that I should use this time at home to pursue a degree and the idea of teaching high school spanish sounded so good! Once I started to speak with the local community college, it seemed like a focus on secondary education-foreign language wasn't available in the area (especially not online). So I decided to go with elementary education hoping that my bilingual abilities would help me land a position once I get my degree. I don't even have my associate's yet so, as you know, the focus is currently on all these general ed courses. I'm sure once I transition over to the bachelor's degree, I'll know more about all the certifications!! Yikes, that scares me!!

Well good luck! Let me know when you have to take the Art History classes to fullfill your arts/humanities requirement! I have my undergrad in Art History--I love that stuff!!!
