hello all! i am new to posting here, thanks for your patience! i am 3 weeks away from having my baby girl and have a 21 month old boy at home who is still sleeping in his crib. i have put off moving him to his toddler bed because he has expressed no desire to be out of his crib but, i would prefer not to have to buy a 2nd crib. we tried last night and he just seemed scared. i don't want to push, he is being moved to a new bedroom and he will have a new sister and there's already gonna be a lot going on. anyone have any thoughts? thanks! |

Hi welcome to the group. Do you have a bassinet? maybe you can put the new baby in one while your son adjusts to his new bed and room. I know it would be uncomfortable for you but maybe you or dad can sleep in his new room with him for a few nights so he is not scared. It is always an adjustment for kids at any age to have a new brother/sister. Maybe too have him help setting up his new room, maybe he will get excited about it and want to be in there. |

My 23 month daughter, just up and one night wanted to start sleeping in her reg. size twin bed. She had no interest from that night on to be back in her crib. That was 3 weeks ago. It really is timing that makes a difference, but I knew for sure I did not want her to still be in a crib past the age of 2. Good Luck!!! |

I agree with Jackie about the bassinet. You want your toddler well settled in his new bed before he sees the baby taking over "his" crib, and your toddler will have time to adjust to the new baby, making the transition to a bed easier when it does happen. Do you have a guard rail on it, that might make it feel more like his crib? Get him excited about having a "big-kid bed". Let him shop with you for new sheets featuring his favorite characters, and encourage him to show his "big-kid bed" to visiting friends and family.Discuss how he is growing and that this will give him more room for sleeping. Also talk about who else sleeps in a big person bed (mom and dad, cousins, friends...) |

When we realized we would be transitioning our children from a crib to a bed, we started showing them magazines that have beds for sale and that also shows toddlers sleeping/modeling in them and we would talk about how they are "big girls" or "big boys" and soon they coulod sleep in a big boy bed like that. After talking about it for a couple of months, we bought a twin size mattress and put it in their room on the floor and told them this was their big boy bed and they can sleep in it when they are ready. We read books to them about growing up and sleeping in a bed also. They chose to sleep on the mattress eventually (after 1-2 weeks) and then we bought a bed to go with the mattress! Hope this helps. |
