Hi,
I have a 10 and 1/2 old son. He crawls and pulls himself to stand, he is very physical. He will be standing there and then dive toward something. As a result, he often bumps his head. When it happends he usually wil cry for about 30 seconds and then is fine, there is usually no mark from it either. I am concerned however if this is affecting his brain or is psyche. I have spoken with the pediatrician who said that babies tend to lead with their heads and that this is normal. I am down on the floor whith him most of the time and this still happens sometimes. Is this bumping of his head really all that normal or should I be taking more steps to prevent it (as in always having a hand on him)? |

I know it's hard, but try not to worry too much or make a big deal of this. I wouldn't keep a hand on him, or make a big fuss, as that may make him scared to take risks and inhibit his development. Just make the environment as safe as possible, put a soft blanket on the floor, put plastic corner covers on furniture, and maybe have mostly soft toys out for him to play with. As long as he gets over it quickly and there's no mark, more than likely there is no damage being done. My son does the same thing, and I try not to make a big fuss everytime he falls because I don't want to make him think something is wrong and scare him away from exploring. If he cries for more than usual, I will comfort him, but otherwise I just use a sing song or happy voice and say "Uh-oh, you fell down! Can you get back up?" He usually smiles and keeps going. |

hi :) my 81/2 month old hits his a lot too infact he dives off stuff head first all the time, he's totally fearless. i catch him most of the time but there have 3 or 4 times that i didnt and i panicked like everytime thinking he would have a concushion or brain damage or something but a good friend of mine told me to check for head injury by looking at his pupils to see if they were different sizes then eachother, and if so go tothe hospital imedeatly. if not just comfort him and ice if needed. so far i've only had to ice his head once. heres hoping there wont be another. (but i know that'll never come true) |

Don't you feel like you should have pillows straped to them all the time, lol. I try not to over react when Emilie falls, I notice that if I show fear then she cries. As long as the crying stops in a minute or so then I know she is alright. We have to remember that we all went through this too and we are ok. |
