| Hi there! My name is Mallory and I am helping to raise a child with Autism in Lakeland, Florida. My boyfriend has an 8 year old son named Peyton and we share custody with the child's mother, so he is only in our care 50% of the time. I thought it would be a good idea to get invested in a local playgroup, but struggled to find one. I decided to bite the bullet and create one because I feel it is extremely important for Peyton to start meeting and playing with other non nuerotypical children.
We as parents need other parents to communicate with. We need a support group. We need people to get advice from, bounce ideas off of, and to laugh, cry, and celebrate with.
Our children need peers to play with and learn from. They need to see that other children struggle too, and that's alright. They need friends who will play nontraditionally along side them. Most importantly, they need and deserve a safe environment in which they can be free to be themselves and not be judged.
I am not really sure how this will work out, but I would like for our group to meet at the same local park on TUESDAY and SATURDAY afternoons. I am sure there will be special events, like parties or group field trips, but we will develop that part later.
I need suggestions on where and when to meet, and I need members. You do not have to attend every meeting to join. Please join our group and message board... The more active the better!
