Moving to Annapolis

Hi, I am a mom of 2 girls 6 and 8.  My husband is in the Navy and we will be moving to Annapolis this summer where he will be a professor at the Naval Academy teaching history for 7 years.  I was hoping I would be able to get some info on where to live.  I hear the school district in Annapolis is not so good and we should live in the Broadneck school district.  We already own 2 homes in Virginia so we will be looking for a long term rental, preferrably on the water, so if anyone could give me advice on what neighborhoods have lots of social events, younger kids, etc I would appreciate it.  I would also like to meet some other moms since I will not know anyone there.

Thanks so much

April Belson

Hi April,

We are hoping to stay, but if we can't we will have a house on the rental market when we are slated to move this summer. (Air Force) We have a 4 BR colonial is edgewater. Not the schools you were looking for, we were considering private, Key School, but waterview and all updated. We would certainly LOVE a military family with long term intentions.

Hello!

We are in a similar situation to April's. We are heading to Annapolis in about a month and are looking for a long-term rental. We aren't concerned about schools, just want a larger house in a nice neighborhood. Any suggestions? Close to downtown, or an easy (no bridge?) drive would be great. We love downtown and plan to frequent it!

Thank you!

Jenny

We are also moving to Annapolis from Southern California. I've never been to the East Coast so this is very new to me. I have four children. How is navy housing on and off base? Is it nice? Is off base in a nice area? I'm boggled with schools. My son is four and has a late birthday. In California they offer the "Teddy" program which is Kindergarten designed for children with late birthdays to prepare them for Kindergarten and give them that extra year they need. I have spent weeks looking and calling only to come to a dead end. Maryland does not offer such a thing, only a pre-k for low income and is not an alternate to Kindergarten. What do parents do that have children with late birthdays? Please help!

I cannot comment on the Navy housing situation. We are AF, and looks like we are headed to Germany in June, so if anyone is looking for a house...its a 4br colonial with a water view in Edgewater...oits on militarybyowner currently. As for late bday and kindergarten, I think most parents just pay for preschool and then do kindergarten the following year...if you are saying you think your child is ready for K early, then you can fight the school and go through testing. We have a gifted daughter and thats the route we would have gone, she is currently a year ahead in preschool...but since we are moving to Germany, I think learning a new language will put her back with her age group. You can also try private school. We toured Key school last month and I got the feeling they would work with advanced kids to place them in the proper situation.

For living areas...the best schools are going to be Severna Park...thats probably 20-30 minutes for the Academy. We live in Edgewater, The elementary doesn't show me much, but the HS is good. this area is a cheaper alternative to the higher priced water priviledged areas. We have 5 comm beaches, marinas, etc. Its an eclectic area...where you are starting to see million dollar houses go up because of the water, but a summer shack still sits next to it.

Ive lived in MD most of my life and never go to downtown Annapolis. I guess its nice and has some nice resteraunts, but I just find it boring, Id rather go to Baltimore for The Nat Aquarium, The Sc Center, etc. Places like Riva, Edgewater, Arnold, etc are just outside of Annapolis and offer water access, plus the ammenities of a more suburban community...Target, Mall, chain resteraunts, Grocery stores, etc.

Feel free to ask if you have anymore questions...
