Dangerous Toxins From Genetically Modified Plants Found in Women and Fetuses

This is the headline from the Institute for responsible technology. A recent study out of Canada has found the BT toxin from GMO corn in the blood of 93% of 30 pregnant women tested. They also found that 80% of those women had the toxin in their umbilical cord blood, meaning this toxin is being transferred to their unborn babies.

Bt toxin is a pesticide that has been historically sprayed onto crops. It works by destroying the stomachs of certain plant pests and killing them. GMO researchers have incorporated a gene from a soil bacteria called Bacillus thuringiensis (hence, the name BT). This gene makes the corn plant produce the pesticide itself. In essence, the plant becomes it's own pesticide factory.

So why and how is this toxin getting into human blood? Well, one human study done on GMO roundup ready soy showed that the gene from the soy incorporated itself into the intestinal bacteria of the host. This made the intestinal bacteria of that person resistant to the herbicide, Roundup.  There have been no studies done on corn, but if we apply what happened with GMO soy then the following scenario may be the source of the BT toxin in these women. The pregnant woman eats or has eaten GMO corn. Remember this corn is "programmed through gene modification" to produce a pesticide. After consuming the corn the gene is released into the digestive tract. It then incorporates itself into the gut bacteria of the person who ate it. This person now has gut bacteria "infected" with this BT producing gene. These bacteria then produce and secrete the Bt toxin directly into the intestinal tract where it is absorbed into the bloodstream. To me, this is the most likely cause of these blood levels of BT toxin and all the more reason to avoid anything GMO.
