Bisphenol A and bisphthalate (DHEP) are 2 chemicals used in plastics and resins used by the food industry. They are widely used in the lining of cans and plastic packaging. These chemicals are both well known human endocrine disruptors. That is, they either mimic or block our hormone signals. For example bisphenol A is a xenoestrogen. It mimics the horomone estrogen in our bodies. This can lead to increased risk of cancer and early onset puberty in children. Early puberty is associated with an increases risk of breast cancer later in life.
A recent study was done to evaluate the effect of a fresh food diet on levels of these two chemicals in the body. Participants were placed on a diet of organic fresh foods that were not packaged in cans or plastic. Remarkably after only 3 days on this diet their Bisphenol A levels dropped by 60% and there DHEP levels by 50%.
This study is just another illustration of how processed foods can be harmful to our health, especially the health of our children. Eating fresh, organic and local WHOLE foods will significantly decrease your exposure these potent environmental toxins. Let's continue to keep our children healthy together! |
