5 ways GMO's may be harming our children.

1. GMO's have been linked to infertility in animals. A study done on rats feed GMO soy showed that by the 4th generation 75% of their offspring were sterile.  Also, there have been anecdotal reports by mid-west farmers of infertility in pigs and cows that were feed GMO corn. The scary part of this it could take 200 years for us to know the impact GMO has on the fertility of our offspring.

2. Organ damage. Another rat study done in Russia revealed that rats fed GMO soy had bleeding stomachs, as well as liver and kidney damage.  In addition they had smaller, discolored testes.  Some of these rats even began growing hair in their mouths!

3.  Increased risk of food allergy.  GMO's produce more allergens. For example levels of trypsin inhibitor were 27% higher and Lectin concentration was doubled in GMO soy that was tested. These are two well known allergens.

4.  Pesticide exposure.  Roundup ready soy and corn receive 3-5 times the amount of pesticide application vs. conventionally grown. Roundup is toxic to humans.  It is also a well known hormone disruptor, potentially having a negative impact on fertility in adults and our childrens' fertility

5. Potential increased risk of cancer through gene transfer.  A leading researcher in Scotland, Dr. Stanley Ewen states that the Cauliflower mosaic virus used in GM foods may increase the risk of stomach and colon cancers.  Altered genes in GMO can potentially get transferred into our own DNA, changing it's structure. Anytime there is a change in DNA, there is a chance it may cause cancer.  After all, cancer is caused by damaged DNA.

The safety of GMO foods is unproven, yet our government allows them to be part of our food supply (more on why in my next post). Don't be part of the experiment!! Read the labels of your food. Anything containing the words corn or soy should be avoided, unless it states that they are organic!! For more info on GMO's go to www.nongmoproject.org. Comments and questions about this post are always welcome! Let's continue to keep our kids happy and healthy together!!
