Hi I have a 10 month old son who refuses to feed himself finger foods. He will only eat the finger food if I feed it to him. If I hold the cracker to his mouth he bites off pieces of it but if I put it on his high chair tray he throws it on the ground. He also will not eat any table foods. He will only eat baby food. While he is eating the third foods he gags on anything even remotely thick. I am concerned for when he becomes a year old as I do not know what to feed him other than baby food. I would like to know two things. For one when should he start feeding himself finger foods or his baby foods and second how can I start the transition to table foods? |

My son was the same way. He would gag even changing form first stage to second stage. I had to mix the two before he would eat it. After about a week he was fine with just the second stage. You might try the graduates items like the fruit puffs, they are easy for him to eat and melts in his mouth. My son also like there crackers. He would not eat 3rd stage foods or the graduates meals. He would gag and get sick on me. My son also like little pices of hambugar and chicken. My son is 20 months and still does not have all of his teeth so I cut them up in small pices and he does fine. I am not sure how to get him to eat on his own but my son always wants a baby fork even though he eats with his hands maybe you might be able to try that. Just sit him in his chair and give him a taste of it but then let him do the rest. Dont feed him for about 10 minutes and he might just start eating it if he knows you are not going to do it for him. My son still sometime will not want to drink out of his cup unless I am holding it but then I just tell him that I am not going to hold it and he will have a fit but then will drink it his self. You just need to show him that he has to start being a little independant. Just keep trying and he will get it. |

I think my son was about 18 months before I let him feed himself anything other then crackers. He liked to throw food and I just did not want the mess everywhere. He ate stage 2 baby foods until 15 months or so. Even after introducing him to other stages, it really depended on the thickness of the stages. He gagged a lot with the things with whole peas and pasta. I think it's a texture thing. Don't stress about it and don't put a timeframe on it. It never bothered me that other kids were eating "real food" and he wasn't. Try giving him what you are eating when you are eating it and see if that intrigues him. My son seems to try new things that Daddy eats/feeds him vs trying new things when I try feeding him. |

My son is 1 and will eat crackers and cheerios but doesn't want table food so I am glad to see I am not alone. Dr. said to keep working with him on the table food but how do you get a kid to eat something he just does not want? It took us a lot of practice to get the hang of self feeding anything but he got it at about 10.5 months. I don't have any suggestions on the table foods other than to keep trying and hope for the best. That is what we are doing. |

Hi Meagan,
Are the table foods you're feeding him cooked to be really, really soft? If he gags on the food, it might be either too big or too hard...just an idea.
My son is just transistioning too and it is like a plow coming toward him...everything goes in the lap.
Definitely tests your patience! I think it will just happen, when they're ready. We just have to keep trying.
