evening breastfeeding drama

My 4 week old baby breastfeeds great.  She has been a natural from the very beginning.  In the hospital we breastfed exclusively which was my goal, however once we got home Lily screamed all day and night the first two days at home, the third day we went to the pediatrician and found that she had lost 15% of her birth weight! we ended up supplementing with formula for a few weeks, but are now breastfeeding exclusively again and Lily is gaining weight no problem... EXCEPT in the evening/night... sometime between 4-6pm each evening Lily decided all she wants to do is eat and that lasts until around 2 or 3 in the morning I pretty much feed her non stop between those hours.  taking her off and rocking or bouncing her for short increments so that I can eat dinner or just give my nipples a short break.  Thankfully I have not had any problems with nipple trauma because she has a good latch... has anyone else had a similar experience? please tell me it won't last! I really want to breast feed for a full year, but I need to be able get stuff done too!

Did it last? It could have been a growth spurt. My baby girl is 6 weeks old now and she seemed to go through this every other week. And then at her 1 month check up I learned she had gained 2 pounds!

My daughter did it too, she literally used me as the human pacifier! She didn't even eat half the time she just wanted to suck but she refused to suck on anything but me and it happend like clockwork between 6PM and Midnight and she could not be put down etc.. I wasn't eating dinner until after midnight half the time. Luckily she out grew this when she discovered her hands and sucks on those instead, she is 3 months old and only stopped doing the needing to suck thing about 3 weeks ago. I have heard a lot of babies have issues like that later in the evening. Since she doesn't have issues with breast feeding maybe try pumping and giving her a bottle or giving her a pacifier. My daughter refuses both of those but it's worth a try! Good luck and she will out grow this !
