My son is 8 1/2 months old. He eats Stage 2 foods, including pureed meats and loves it. The pediatrician recommended offering him Cheerios and puffs and some table foods, but he immediately gags, chokes, throws up and cries. I boiled a potato and mashed it with a fork to a semi-thick consistency and fed him a tiny spoonful and he gagged and puked. I smashed a tiny bit of banana and put a peice the size of a grain of rice in his mouth and he gagged but managed to swallow it and asked for more. Has anyone else experienced this, and do you have any suggestions as to how I can diminish his gag reflex and start introducing him to table foods? I heard that if you wait too long, the gag reflex is much harder to fix. |

Hi Elizabeth, I have the same problem with my daughter, she is almost a year and still has trouble eating table foods. I have never heard about the gag reflex being harder to fix as they get older, I just figured she is not ready for this kind of food. I do use gerber stage 3 and also give her finger foods. She is slowly starting to chew and doesn't gag nearly as much, it's just a long process. When she was younger I didn't want her choking or vomiting, I didn't think it was healthy. |
