My son RAN ACROSS THE STREET!!!

I'm making myself crazy thinking about what could have happened today, when my three year old son was running down the sidewalk and didn't stop when he got to the street!! Thank God there were no cars!!!

We were on our block walking to the park, which we do all the time. I think he just got carried away running as fast as he could (did I mention I'm 8 months pregnant and couldn't sprint to catch him?). I should have kept him closer to me. This is the first time he's ever done this. He always runs and always stops and waits for me. I feel like I should get a leash, but COME ON, he's not a dog!! It would however, make me feel better.

I'm making myself sick thinking over and over again...what if!??! Has anything like this happened to anyone else out there? Please share your story.

My son didnt run across the street but i had a "what if?!?!"   It was about 2 weeks ago. I was sitting on the couch eating a yogurt and my 2 year old came up and asked for a bite. I gave him one. Than he went to the silverware drawer to gethis own spoon. He does this on a daily basis. Has been for the past year. And me not baby proofing i still have the knives tucked in the back. Well he finally found them. I look over and he has a big ol knife. I kinda looked at him with the thought omg what the hell do i do. So stupid me got up and ran after him. Making him think mommy was playing with him. So he proceeds to run around the dinner table into the living room where he throws it. In the direction of his sleeping brother in his swing. The swing literally went up to the left and just as it was swinging back down the knife went by. It shocked me so much i didnt get mad, i just said in a quiet calm voice, ok, it didnt get him. Hes still sleeping. i was horrified. Obviously i know he didnt know what he was doing, it was a game and mommy wanted the toy he had!! So i explained to him that he couldve gotten a bad boo boo along with brother. Needless to say the knives are way up now !!! So yeah there is my omg what if moment!!!!

Hey Liz

I totally know how your feeling.  My son likes to run towards the street no matter what I say.  I understand your feelings on getting a leash but let me just say, its one of the best things I have ever bought.  I bought him a cute little frog backpack that has a leash on it and he doesn't mind it at all.  His safety is number 1 and especially since your 8 months pregnant and can't run I would definately get one so he's at your side at all times and can't take off on you. I think they are a great idea.  They are just long enough so that he doesn't feel like he's tied down and he still has his independence.  Definately get one though, you would feel A LOT better

Thanks Moms, for your support and suggestions!! I knew I could count on you!! He's listening much better now. I'm going to look into one of these back packs with a leash--great idea. After all, I'd rather have a safe child with a leash than no child after an accident! SORRY for being so morbid!!
