something else

My child has been found eligible for services through our public schools. He is 3 years old and now they want to do even more testing. this time on his fine and gross motor skills and his social behavior. I am afraid that all the testing involved will label him something I don't believe he is (autistic). I find myself full of fear and riddled with guilt over his lack of development. I can't stand the way evaluators think they can label my child from one meeting. I think my son is just a unique learner who needs a little push. So what if he can't ride a bike yet or put on his own shoes. I am just tired and wanted to vent to parents that understand.

I am in the same boat, my daughter needed services very early.  We have been though a lot of testing, hearing, eyes ect.  I know that it is hard to hear something, or think they will be labled. It has been very hard for us. But, I am glad we have done all the testing that we have done. I say to myself that even if its bad news, at least we did all that we could do for her.  Take one thing at a time. Also, most likely no one will lable him and I don't walk around saying that my daughter is a spec ed child.  If its a good friend, then they will get it.  Don't worry about what other's may say and concentrate on what you think he needs.  hope that helps.

Make sure that you share what he is like at home.  I make sure to tell his teachers what he is doing at home, and they say that some of that he doesn't do there.  They have even visited him at home and have seen this for themselves.

Maybe ask them if they can see him in a familiar setting.

When they first tested Noah they said that he couldn't stick with one toy.  That he was all over the place.  I told them that he was in a room filled with toys that he had never seen before.  So of course he was going to play with everything all at once.

Don't worry about it all.  If you aren't comfortable with something they say about your son, something that you see him do differently at home, tell them.  You are the say all.  Not them.

Good luck and God bless!
