Is she too small?
My daughter is 18 months old and she weighs 22 pounds and she is 30 inches long. I know she is at the bottom of the range for her age but do you think she is too small? I have people tell me all the time how tiny she is for her age because she is not chubby at all except in her cheeks and it is starting to worry me. Her Dr. said she is fine but then the woman at the WIC office says she needs to gain weight and I dont know what to do.

Not she is not too small. The WIC staff does not know what they're talking about. They told me one of my daughters was too big, and she clearly was not. The same lady went as far as to say that my daughter was, "chubby." I told her that my daughter is 4 and can hear you and I don't think that helps her self-esteem or her self-worth. That woman should have been fired for speaking about young girls that way, especially right in front of them. So I looked into their education requirements and they give uneducated advice. Do not overthink they're suggestion. Believe your Dr. who said she was just fine. =)

Hi Nikki,

My daughter wasn't even 20 pounds at 18 months and we wound up having to take her into the hospital to see why she wasn't gaining weight...All they came up with is that she takes after her Dad, he's on the small side himself. The doctors here list it as "Failure to Thrive", even though we were giving her food whenever she wanted it! If either you or her dad are on the small side I'd say she's taking after that parent!!

Your daughter is not too small!!! Do not worry about what other people think, especially if your doctor thinks she's in good health!!! You know your daughter best and if you're at all concerned about something then I would take her back to her doctor otherwise just keep doing what you're doing now!!! Good Luck to you and your daughter!!

No I wouldn't say she is too small. My daughter is 2 and only weights about 22 pounds and is only 31 inches tall. She was probably just the same size as your daughter when she was 18 months. She was still in 12 month and under clothes as 18 months. I have a lot of people tell me too that she is tiny and too smale, but our doctor says that she is just fine and healthy... so that is all that matters to me.

Hello Nikki,

I would ask my doctor first. WIC would not know. My daughter was always small also, she is going to be 10 in Aug. and she is still very small. Weighing in at 50 pounds. I have just had my second and now she is very large for her age. I think these things are what makes each child an individual. Best advice I can give is to talk to your Dr.

Hi Nikki, I actually stoped going to WIC because they used to harp on me that my daughter was over-weight, which my doctor said she is perfectly fine! I also have a tiny one and they told me she was too small. She is now 5 yrs old but she was only 35 lbs for about 2 years, Doc said shes very active and actually has muscle tone so i shouldnt be worried at all unless shes not eating healthy, which she eats very healthy and you would be suprised how much one tiny girl can eat. I also have 2 whom are picky eaters but they are pleasently plump lol go figure. When the Wic staff tell you those things just nod and pretend you are listening. Go by what your doctor says.
