1st haircut

Hello,

I scheduled an appointment for my son's first haircut for this Saturday.

I'm anxious about how he's going to react when a stranger tries to cut his hair for the first time.  My son is  almost 17 months old.

I would love to hear everyone's experiences with their child's first time haircuts.

How did your child do at their first cut?  How old were they when they got their first cut.

Thanks in advance everyone!

My daughters first hair cut went great.  I put her up in the chair and had to hold her hand underneath the cape but she did fantastic.  She was not quite 1 and is now 3 and loves to have her hair cut.  Best advice i got was to not put them on your lap for their first few hair cuts, then they won't sit in the chair by themselves when they are older.  Talk it up to him, make him feel like this is a big boy thing, get him excited about it and it'll be a breeze

My husband cut my son's hair the first time and he did great!  We sat him on the table and gave him his favorite toys to play with and he loved it!  Having said that, not every haircut since then has been so easy.  We did the first one before he was one, and after that he got squirmy, and the toys didn't cut it.  The last time we did it, we put him in his high chair and parked him in front of the tv so he could watch a cartoon...didn't help much!  We've taken him to one of those salons for kids (Monkey Dooz) and it was WONDERFUL.  The gal was SO fast and she did a great job, plus he got to sit in a little jeep and they had toys for him to play with and a cartoon to watch...he was more interested in the toys than the movie.  If you don't mind spending a little bit more money, it may be worth it.  Before I had a child I used to think how ridiculous and over-priced that place was, and how I'd never waste the money on something like that...oh how things change!  I hope it went well for your little one!

Thanks Amanda and Andi.   Your advice was great.

I took a litle bit of both your advice. I took Amanda's advice and  talked positively to him about it as if he were a big boy and made it a fun experience for him and I took Andi's advice and took him to  a salon for kids  and it was perfect!  I still can't believe he sat through the whole hair cut. Before going, I had this terrible feeling that he was going to just go berzerk when he saw the scissors coming at him, but the kid's salon was great.  He was seated in a little tractor jeep and he was enterained just playing with the steering wheel.  Normally he would not go near someone he doesn't know, but he was comfortable enough to let the hairstylist work on him while he was entertained with the kiddie environment.  Thank you both!

I'm SO glad that he did so well at his first hair cut.  I tried both of those for my sons 2nd hair cut(his first his Granny cut his hair at 11mo cause it was SOOOOOOO long) and he FREAKED he did NOT want that strange lady near him.  BUT he acted the same way at all except his last 2 hair cuts the last one his daddy cut his hair and the one before that one he only cried a little...but with ALL of them I had to sit in the chair and hold him.
