Flying Tips
I've flown a bunch of times when my son was small, I fed him and he would sleep for the flight, but now that he is a mini Action Jackson, I'm nervous, frightened, a WRECK!!! Flying with my hubby, no big deal... solo is what I'm concerned about.
But my hubby can't take off work like that, so I am forced to fly solo on a 5hr flight... Does anyone have any tips? I'd be holding him in my lap, I'm not sure how to keep him occupied. He won't sleep if he's not in his crib. Then I thought, I could just not go but I don't want to deny my family or him "together" time either.
HELP!!!

Hi Candice,

I know there's this backpack that you can wear that will keep him on your chest, if he's small enough, to give you free hands, but as far as keeping him occupied, I'd deprive him of sleep and feed him just about before you board. I've also been told that some bulk heads have some kind of bed or something for babies. Good luck and let us know how it goes, all us other moms need to learn also. Please keep in touch and let us know. Sorry we couldn't have been more help.

My friend has a 9 month old and she flies all the time with him on her lap. She usually gives him Tylonel before the flight due to his ears might hurt him. She also brings cheerios and a bottle. Also, she brings books, She tries not to have him sleep to much before the flight so he is tired. Hope this helps. Let me know how you both do.

I'm in the same boat. Flying Tuesday FL to CA solo. Anyone else use tylenol prior to the flight for ears? My son has flown a few times and his ears are always a problem during landing. He is also now 11 months and I'm worried about the active part too. Candice, I plan on bringing a bag full of toys. But I used to do that and he got bored with them so quickly. I'm not sure how its going to go. I do travel with a stroller for gate changes and have them check it at the plane. It helps to have him situated and have somewhere to shove the diaper bag etc while at the airport. Good luck. Hope it goes well.

Would he sleep in a car seat if you got him his own seat? My son will not sit still in my lap (anywhere) or fall asleep on me, but loves his car seat. We buy him a seat for our own sanity. It's easier to feed him in it and he usually sleeps at least half of the flight. I'm sure it would have been a nightmare if he was on my lap.

Hey girl,
I have flown 6 times, 4 of them alone, with my daughter who is now 11 months old. It's HARD the older they get but here is what has worked for me. Keep him up while you're driving to the airport, in the terminal, at the gate, etc. I take my daughter in a baby backpack and it's great because I have free hands and I can set it down and it works as a chair for her too. I give her a teaspoon of Benadryl as the plane is taking off (this assures that you are, truly, leaving instead of having a comatose baby and a late flight). It doesn't knock her out, it just helps her sleep deeper beause she also refuses to sleep in her car seat, her stroller, anywhere else but her crib! I bring a bottle and give it to her while we take off to help with her ears (you can do a pacifier too). If I'm lucky she will sleep, sometimes she won't. I bring lots of Cheerios, animal crackers, we play hide the toy in the barf bag, all sorts of things. I'm not going to lie, it's really really hard, but you've got lots of family who are way excited to see you and help with the baby on the other end so you can rest! Good luck, you can do it!
