Decreasing formula at 6-7 months?

I currently have WIC and starting in April they are reducing his formula from 9 cans a month to 5! That seems like such a big difference. Next week he will be 5 months so April he will be 7 months. Does this sound right?? By then he should be doing a lot better with his foods. I've started him on the gerber fruits and veggies and is trying to get the hang of it! Right now he is getting 6-7 bottles a day (6oz a bottle) I was just wondering what is "recommended" at 6-7 months for formula. I thought that the formula/breast milk was the most important nutrient for them until age 1.

Well, its depends on what your doctor says.. The gerber foods are Good, but all the things that he needs is in formula as well, if you breast feed, Then that's good enough, if you can get formula.. Til he's one, then use both My son couldn't keep down formula for the first 6months of life so he was strictly breast feed, then I would, do both. Formula when were out, and breast feed for down time at home, My son is 15 months old and is still breast feeding, but he's currently being weaned. my pediatrician told me not to take Raven off formula til he was 1.. Then he was put on whole Cows Milk.. Talk to ur pediatrician.. To see what's best so that you can be sure he's getting all he needs :)

Yeah, I'd ask the doctor too.  If the doc wants your son to continue on the same amount of formula, he might be able to help out with some samples, etc to get you through. My son's doc recommended that we go down to about 4 bottles/day at 6 months and feed him solids basically as often as he would eat them.  You might try making your own baby food and freezing it--it saved me a lot of money and doesn't have the "fillers" that a lot of commercial baby foods have.  Basically you just buy the veggies/fruits, wash them, chop them up, put them on the stove with just enough water to cover them and cook them until they're soft. Then mash them up, cool and serve.  My son also liked food that didn't need to be cooked, like bananas and avacados (which are relatively inexpensive when you compare them to jarred baby food).  Good luck!

The wic program is not meant to supply you all of the formula you would need for a month it meant just as a suppliment, to provides you with formula so you dont have to buy so much you self but you still have to buy some yourself i did with my baby too and still do with the whole milk as well she is 13months now.

Back when my little girl was 7 months she drank just as much formula as she did at 5 months. You're right in thinking it still would be a very important part of her diet.

well I may not be a bit help but by 7months my son was eating regular foods PLUS his 4 bottles of formula.  He would get a bottle when he got up, a bottle right before nap, a bottle right after nap and a bottle right before bed then regular food for meals(he had ALOT of teeth by 7mo).

I would think that the formula is just as importaint at 7 months as it is 5...you don't want to ween from the formula tll atleast 11 or 12 months.

If I was you I would talk to your Dr see what he/she says then if your dr thinks that he will need the forumla maybe he/she could write a note and you can give the note to the WIC office...You should make sure they aren't cutting off your supply just to save money.  My friends son is 2months older than mine and when he was a 2months old they told her he was getting too fat and WIC cut her formula down.  I feel that WIC is just trying to NOT pay so much and think a good way to save money is to cut your stuff off.

Thanks Amers...We just qualify for wic since my husband works for the state (when they decide to keep their paychecks). They are so mean at that office! They told us our son was fat too and I called the doctors crying and they said he was just fine and right on track. I was just wondering though. My little guy is hungry boy! I didn't know if he would go down on how much formula he would eat. Since starting the solids he hasn't drank as much. Thanks again.

I am still breastfeeding my daughter, she is 8 1/2 months. At her 6 month check-up her doctor reduced her nursing from 6-8 times a day to 4 times a day and added tablefood for breakfast, lunch and dinner, so you should be okay with the reduced amount of formula.
