Won't Take A Pacifier!
My son won't take a pacifier. I must have bought every single pacifier they have out on the market. He just prefers to suck on his fingers/hand. People have said some things about it but I feel horrible taking his fingers away when I know it is a soothing mechanism for him. I was never a thumb sucker but my husband sucked his thumb for years, so I'm getting mixed reviews from the grandparents. HELP! It seems like every new mom I've met doesn't have this problem. I know my son is teething as well....is this bad for his teething?

Hello, my daughter never wanted a pacifier, but she has always sucked her thumb, even now that she is 16 months she still does it to soothe herself to sleep. My husband always sucked his thumb also, and his teeth are fine. I think after age two they should stop and when she learns to talk I will teach her that it's not good for her teeth. Maybe ask your pediatrician for advice.

Emilie uses a pacifer, but when she was younger if it fell out she would use her finger and sometimes a toe lol. I wouldn't worry right now about his teeth and him sucking on his finger he is still very young. Try some teething toys maybe he would like them better. Both of my nephews never liked a pacifer they too would just use thier fingers and neither one sucks thier thumbs, they are 4 & 2.

My daughter wouldn't take one either..but just think that is one less thing you will have to ween him off.

My daughter is 3 1/2 months old. Never wanted a pacifier until 3 mths old. My mother said " MY KIDS NEVER WANTED PACIFIERS" I hear that alot. I kept giving her the pacifier and putting it back into her mouth until finally she took this one " Gerber" pacifier, not sure the actual pacifier make? I bought it at Target 3.59 for two. There are 3 colors " pink, blue, green" they are clear. Every new mommie i see usually has the "soothie" pacifier. Good Luck and keep trying! Pacifier has made both our lives happier=)

My daughter never wanted a pacifier either. She would always suck on her fingers. She still does sometimes. She did suck her thumb for a little while, but that didn't last very long. I really wouldn't worry about it b/c I actually think it is a good thing. I agree with Sally...it is one less thing to ween him off of. If he wants to use his fingers to sooth himself than so be it...go with what works for him (and you!)

Thanks for all the advice. I think the pacifiers are out! Anyone need a pacifier? any pacifier? I feel so dumb for buying so many different kinds. My husband would sigh every time we would go to the babies r' us because I would find a new and improved pacifier every time.

Heather, I worry about thumb sucking, too. But I gave my son a pacifier and, at 1 month old, he took it out of his mouth and stuck his thumb in. If that's what soothes him, then he can have it. When he gets a little older I'll worry about how to break the habit. Both my husband and I sucked our thumbs and no teeth problems, so I'm not going to stress about it. All babies are different, so do what works for him, and everyone in the house will be happier!

I don't know how true this is, but I read somewhere that they'll learn hand coordination by sucking on their hands. It's part of the developmental stage.

My son will take a pacifier, but only if I sit with him and hold it for him. He has a tendency to pop it out, he can't quite keep it in yet. But I'm not going to push it on him either. Usually, when he starts sucking on his hands, I know that he is getting hungry. It's a good sign for me.

I think that while he is so young, he should take comfort where he can - be that the thumb, the hand or a pacifier - my girl does both, pacifier to fall asleep and whole hand after that!!.
