Death of a beloved pet

Well our almost 12 year old pug is doing really horribly, her back legs barely work. I foresee having to put her down very soon. My 20 month old loves this dog (like all of us). I am trying to figure out how I am going to explain the disappearance of our dog in simple terms. We are not at all religious so it's very tricky. She is too young to understand but she will miss Audrey the Pug. Any suggestions??

This sounds awful but my mom use to tell us when a pet died that they had to go to the country. She'd tell us that she had to take them to the farm. I know it's cliche but it could work.
