Introducing solids
I started introducing my son to solids a couple of weeks ago and it seems like his feeding schedule has changed a lot. He only gets solids (1st gerber foods mixed with rice cereal) twice a day, or about 2.5 - 5 oz, and I continue to nurse the rest of the time. However, it seems like when he nurses, he doesn't eat as much or as long or as often. Am I just noticing it takes longer because I'm not taking into account the solids or is he really not eating that often? Has anyone else experienced this? The other day, it went a good 5 hours without eating and that isn't like him...normally.

I should also mention that he has been getting up more often at night and eating. Granted not for very long, 5 or 10 minutes, but it's still more than what he was doing. Before he would only get up twice at night (around 3am and then again around 6am) and eat for a good 10-20 minutes. Now he gets up every 2 to 3 hours starting from the time I put him to bed (which is between 8-9pm). I would rather he eat every 3 hours during the day, not at night. :)

When I 1st started with solids my sons feeding pattern changed too. He is probably nursing less during the day because the solid food is staying with him longer so he is not as hungry. I dont think it is anything to be worried about

My pediatrician said I couldn't substitute nursing with feeding my son solids. Since he is going longer due to being full, wouldn't that automatically do that?

When you first introduce solids, they are not supposed to replace breastmilk or formula because they don't have as many calories or nutrients. It is mostly for him to learn how to swallow it and to get used to the different tastes and textures. However, feeding patterns will change when new things are introduced, so don't worry about that. You could nurse him before you give him solid foods so he doesn't fill up too much. But remember that now that he has started solid foods he will gradually nurse less as he eats more.

My son did the exact same thing. He actually use to nurse 20 minutes on both sides before I introduced solids. Now, I am lucky to get 5 minutes on both sides. I have tried nursing him on one side, then feed him solids, then nurse on the other side. I have also tried feeding the solid and then nursing, but what I have found to work best is to nurse both sides first and then feed him the solid. He still only nurses about 5 minutes on both sides, but it is a good solid 5 minutes. He actually even dropped a feeding. I use to nurse him 5 times a day, and now he nurses only 4 times a day (every 4 to 4 1/2 hours). His pedi said that this is normal and expected so for me not to worry. She said that eventually he will have 3 solid meals a day and 2 or 3 liquid feedings. My son still sleeps through the night for now, so I am not sure about the feedings during the night.
