Hi Laura,
I can understand what you are feeling. I am currently trying to potty train my 2 1/2 year old and some days are good while others I feel like giving up. My first son wasn't interested until after he turned 3 years old. After his first time on the potty, he was golden. Now my second son, he is a little more stubborn. He told me he was ready to go potty. He initiated going to the bathroom and letting me know when he had to go, and he would really go!!! We praise him and try to encourage him. While most days are great, he does still have accidents in his pants (usually poopy) when we are away from home. I am starting to think that he isn't familiar with the bathroom and perhaps gets intimidated. Not sure, but you should hang in there as long as your son is interested. Did he initiate that he was ready? Was he dry after naps and in the morning? They say that that is a good sign also. Good luck!! |

My 4 yr old was potty trained at 22 months. We never pushed or disciplined him to get him to use it. It was clean and we let him play with it for a while and showed him how his stuffed animals might like to use it too. When he started using it on his own we praised him a lot and told him that if he could go poo-poo in it we'd give him shiny pennies for his car bank. It was a bank my dad found at Wal-Mart some time ago, and when coins are dropped in, it makes loud racing and revving engine noises. After the first poo-poo and shiny penny for his bank, he was hooked! He wanted to do it all the time and then get his penny. We only gave him pennies for poo-poo so that it didn't lose it's incentive value. |

The bank is a good idea we do a sticker chart but I think something new is in order. he does wake from nap usually dry then i take him right to the toilet and he goes. As far as telling me he isnt doing that yet. I have to take him :( laura |

Laura,
My son was 3 when we started and he still needs my help at 3 1/2.
He won't stand or is not able to sit with out a seat. I just picked up another seat to bring with me places if I cannot get him to the potty in my car. I still need that one becasue some parks do not have clean bathroom.
It will happen in time. Don't stress out or he will feel it and not want to go.
Oh I also used M&M's and Gummy worms. 1 for #1 and 2 for #2.

You might think this is gross but mom used this technique and it did work with my daughter. I only put underwear on and no diaper when we were home. They would have many accidents in their pants but eventually they would stop. I would just put them on the potty every hour.
When we went out I used a diaper.
BTW my son loved the gummy worms I guess it is a boy thing. |

My son is almost three and we are going through this too, the piggy bank thing sounds like a good idea! thanks! We are doing the underwear thing right now, because the problem we are having is that if he is wearing a diaper, he won't tell us he has to go.....if he is wearing underwear at least he is aware of the fact that he peed his pants, and that it HAPPENED....and that next time, he tells us...so we start to get more hits than misses.....slow progress but still progress! lots of laundry though |

We went through so many pairs of underwear. Max loves boxer briefs. Make sure you have at least 20 pairs. |
