Infant constipation

My baby was perfectly fine with her stool until she was one month old. She will be 3 month this weekend, she eats 20-21 ounces a day and she weighs 15 pounds.  She began to have stool every two or three days after the first month and one time she went on for 5 days, by the fifth day we used the Liquid Glycerin Suppositories as our pediatrician advised. Since then we have to use the Liquid Glycerin Suppositories almost every week. After each time we used it she has stools every day for 3-4 days and she backs up again. She eats, sleeps and plays perfectly normal and no sign of any discomfort. She has 70%-80% of expressed breath milk and 20-30% Similac formula every day since she was born nothing has been change in her diet or any other things. We tired massage, warm water bath, feed more frequently……she was checked by a surgeon last week just to make sure she has a normal anus and she does. We really don’t want to relay on Liquid Glycerin Suppositories and every day waiting her stool is nervous and painful. Does anyone has similar experiences? How did you solve this problem? Any suggestion is greatly appreciated?

My husband and I went through something similar with our baby. He was quite regular then became quite unregular after a he was a month or so old.

The changes in her digestion system probably have more to do with her intestines growing longer (and taking more time to digest food) and less to do with an actual problem with her anus.

We had to do rectal stimulation (what parents have done for decades for this problem we learned from my husbands mother) on our son for a few months before our son became regular again on his own. We'd let him go for about 36 hours and do the rectal stimulation and he'd usually poop in a few hours.

My daughter had a similar problem. We did the rectal stimulation for a couple months.  When she got about 3 months old we started putting prune juice in her bottle-about 1 to 2 ounces mixed in her formula once a day.  She never had any trouble again!  Once she got about 6 months old and started eating baby food we gave her fruit like peaches and were able to quit doing the prune juice.  Good luck!

I can understand your worry over this.  My son once went 7 days without a bowel movement.  We took him to the hospital because he seemed to be in discomfort.  There is also a history on my husbands side of a prolapsed large intestine, so we were worried about that.  They did an x-ray and it ended up being that he was full of gas.  We used mylecon drops for him and it helped with the gas.  There was nothing wrong with the pooping part though.  Breastfed babies(which my son was) can go a while without pooping and it be absolutely normal.    THe saying is that anything from 7 poops in one day to 1 poop in 7 days is normal for a breastfed baby.  I would suggest not using the suppositories and see how she does.  Even if she goes 7 days in between pooping, as long as she is eating, playing, sleeping, and urniating normally then I wouldn't worry about it.  If the doctors have check and assured you that nothing is physically wrong, then let nature take its course.  You don't want to become dependent on laxitives (oral or suppositories) because they can eventually cause problems (such as needing them to have a bowel movement at all).  Hope this helps.

You may also want to give your daughter a few ounces of prune juice everyday to keep her regular. My doctor suggested that to me when my daughter was constipated, after the rectal stimulation and glycerin suppositories didn't do the trick. It may ultimately have been a combination of the suppository AND prune juice that gave way to final success, but if your daughter is having issues with keeping regular, a little prune juice everyday might do the trick. Good luck!!:-)
