Some of you know that the transition to driving thing isn't going so smoothly with Daniel (almost 16). He has to pass an 8th grade reading comprehension exam in order to get his learner's permit/license before he's 18. He doesn't test well, he goes as fast as he can, and he never was good at those reading comprehension questions. Heck, I read 90-to-nothing, and take in information like a sponge and I still don't do well on reading comprehension tests. So there's that.
Then there's the fact that there are two more almost-16 boys that we practically live with, and we will be doing part of our homeschooling with them. Their mothers just assume their kids won't have a problem with the test (and they might not) and have already slotted Driver's Ed and keep talking like Daniel's going to be taking driver's ed with the other two.
Here's the question: Legally it would be ok for him to take the non-driving portion of the driver's ed course before he gets his permit BUT would that be pushing him too much? He doesn't seem to care one way or the other, but you know he's got to have a preference.
Thoughts, comments, suggestions? |

Do not push really dont........... I pushed my son and he not ready yet he got his permit but he only been behind the wheel three times since two months ago........ He was not interested either until I mentioned it then his friends so he wanted to see if he could pass and he failed the first time........ The challenge was on he just wanted to show he could pass.... Well to make a long story short he almost killed me in the passenger seat he cut somone off and they came two inches from my elbow.... I told him to stop and let the other driver go but he thought he had the right away...... I have not let him drive since... I have three other children to worry about....... I do not think he was ready...... Let them be ready on their own...... My son was also scared behind the wheel stiff as a bored........ TAmmy |

Gosh, it's hard to remember how frightening all that was. I wasn't given a choice, and had I been, I'd have probably waited a year. I know I was an accident waiting to happen (that never did, thank goodness!).
Daniel's only advantage is that we live out on 15 acres in the country and he has been able to drive on the property, so he's familiar with how the car handles (a little). His two buddies don't even have that!
I told him if he wants to take the test again, that he can do it the last week of August. His daddy is working with him in a Reading Comprehension workbook until then (I'm not quite sure how I got out of doing that, but I'm not griping!). |
