If you can get outside, little boys love to be outside...
collect pebbles, leaves or other small items that you can seal in a glass jar...I have been doing this with my son since he started walking (about 13 months) He would pick things up and I would show him how to put it in the jar...I'd make a REAL huge deal about this, when we were finished playing outside I would bring the jar into the house and before bed we'd show dad, we'd do it all over the next day...the jar came to the beach w/ us, to the park etc...my son is two years old and now he likes to wash rocks, put them in the jar, collect pine cones, you name it...Boys seem to be facinated with balls...and their enviroment... |

Hi Katie
My son is 17 mos old and I have asked myself that same question. I am a sahm to. He is just now starting to sort of play by himself for a little while, not long though. The biggest thing we have always done is read. He loves books and to be read to but after 10 books or so it can get a little boring for me. So then we go to other things. He loved his ball pit at that age, don't know if you have one but you can find them anywhere. My son has always loved to go outside, I know its kinda hot right now but you could go out in the a.m or early evening. We have a little wagon for him that he loves being pulled around in. I started taking my son to the library about that age to. Just go to the kids section he can't hurt anything and that's what it is there for.
I try not to turn TV on to much and he wasn't that intersted until I got him a horse video, he loves horses. You could get maybe a video of something your son really likes and that is always good for 15 or 20 minutes. We only watch them every once in a while. This might sound crazy but I got my son coloring books and the washable crayons. At first he liked to watch me color the picture and now he scribbles on the pictures and picks the crayons out of our little box and wants me to tell him what color it is, good for learning colors. And he has colored the wall once or twice but that is why you get the washable they wipe right off. You have to be creative when you are a stay at home mom. Hope I was able to give you some ideas. |

A balloon was a favorite with my kids, just be careful if it pops that all the pieces are picked up for choking purposes. You can find some with printed cartoon carachters like Thomas the Train or Mickey Mouse. |

Try plastic bowls and spoons my son still loves to get the bowls out and put them on his head and pound them with a spoon. plus playing with water is always fun with different containers to pour water with. |
