I would start by searching this website to see if you can find a play group in your area.

There are often a lot of "free" offerings if you know where to look.  Try a new park (even if you don't actually live in the neighborhood no seems to notice) or play places.  McDonalds and Burger King don't tend to care much and if they do then you can buy a small french fry.

Then there are the things that cost a bit more.  A lot of the birthday party sites will offer reduced rates during the week.  We have several jump house places that inflate and for $5 the kids can jump for an hour.  Chuck E Cheese has great coupons if you sign up for their e-mails.  If you buy one of their plastic cups you can re-fill it for free at future visits.  I can often get 100 tokens for $15 and then with free drinks we can go after we eat lunch at home and before the dinner rush starts.  I tell the kids that we leave when either the tokens are gone or it gets too busy.

If money isn't an issue a lot of malls have build a bear.  You might be surprised, but my boys LOVE build a bear.  And if you are already out shopping anyway head to a pet store.  Even the ones that don't have cats and dogs still have lots of fun.  My boys love looking at the rodents, fish and reptiles.  We will often do this on long road trips because it is a great way for them to feel instantly recharged without having to stray into a big committment.  Another good store just to browse is Toys R Us.  Make a big deal out of leaving your purse in the car so your kids know the answer is no.  We play games like, "Find the perfect gift for your brother," and then the kids are not playing the "I want" game all the time.

Hope some of these ideas help.

We hike a lot.  I carry my youngest in a backpack carrier from REI.com and just head out my door.  I base our walks and hikes on how far my oldest is willing to go.  You'd be amazed at once they start moving how much they love being outside with you.  I also pull them in a bike trailer on my bike and we go for bike rides, great to just get out of the house, or to see things from a different perspective.  We also tent camp, it's wonderful how much my little guys love to camp!  They'll eat all kinds of veggies on the grill while camping that they won't eat at home - LOL!  We visit our local library for storytime, kid programs, to check out books and movies too.  We attend local events at our Barnes and Noble and Borders book stores. Even Home Depot has a once a month activity day for kids, where they get to "build" projects.  Michael's craft stores have kids days where they get to make painted shirts or other crafts (you buy the shirt or main item and they supply the rest).  Visitng a local orchard is fun, fun, fun, and yummy too!  Apple season is upon us, depending on your location, and many orchards have a pick-your-own bag or box.  We visit Apple Hill in Camino, CA, and it's aweome!  Lots of kid stuff to do and see, and they learn about fruit, caring for trees and other plants.  Many local farms offer tours, just need to call and ask if you can visit.  Farmers are wonderful for helping us teach our kids where our food actually comes from.  Most grocery stores will offer tours as well, just ask the manager and let them know you're learning about careers or whatever you want to "study" that day.  We can take our kids and have fun just about anywhere and make it a learning outing too (and I learn a lot as well!).

Good luck and best wishes!!  Feel to contact me with any questions, I'd love to help you find something fun and local for your kiddos.
