I just started my son on cereal a couple of weeks ago and we've started noticing that he sticks out his tongue. During our breastfeeding class, we were told this was a sign of hunger, but (today for instance) he just ate and he's sticking out his tongue. He was never one to use the tongue cue when he was younger and we're wondering if this is related to starting the cereal. Has this happened with anyone else? Or is he just realizing he has a tongue? |

My daughter and I were playing "tongue games" at your sons age. He is realizing that he has what you have and wants to try to mimic you. Try clicking your tongue in front of him and sticking your tongue out while saying "bla, bla, bla." He will do the same...as best he can. |

My daughter (almost 4 months) has discovered her tongue as well! It is so funny. I blow "rasberries" and she tries to copy me. |

He's probably just realized that he has a tounge. My 3 month old just realized she has one and she loves to stick it out at me. |

It is good that he is sticking out his tongue more since you started him on cereal. It means he is learning to palatize his food, or move it from one side of his mouth to the other, like you do when you chew. This is a good thing. It means his natural reflex has kicked in, just like it should. |
