breastfeeding tips

hi there.  this may sound like a stupid question, but how can you tell when your baby is done eating?  (i have a 4 month old.)  and how can you keep them awake when they keep dozing?

thanks!

Hi Dawn,

Well, my son is only seven months old, so I just went through this stuff :D

In the early days of breastfeeding him, he would also always fall asleep and feeding would take forever. I also worried that he wasn't getting enough to eat. Then, my doctor told me to do whatever I had to, to keep him awake for feedings and get him used to it... She told me to blow on his neck, or cheek, tickle his ear, neck, or feet, move his legs around to keep him from dozing etc.  All of these things work.  You could also try undressing them down to their diaper, so that they are not as comfortable, but, that also offers a skin to skin contact that's kind of nice for both of you...or, for night time feedings, change their diaper to wake them up a bit first, then feed them.

As for knowing when they're done ... Seems to me that's an individual thing..My son simply pulls away or just comes off the breast and closes his mouth, he's always done that. My friend's six month old gets fussy when he doesn't want anymore he's more vocal about it :D

Hope these tips help...You'll get used to your own baby's cues too.

thanks vanessa!  i try EVERYTHING to keep him awake (everything that's "nice").  jiggle his leg or ear or arm. i'll burp him hoping to wake him up and it will for about 1/2 a second.  then he's out again.  i'd like to think that if he was really hungry he'd eat....

My daughter would always fall asleep too. I would undress her down to her diaper and that usually helped. Other than that I would gently rub her cheek by her jaw bone and that would encourage her sucking reflex. I knew when she was done because she after awhile she would just stop sucking or turn away. I would sometimes just go at least 10 min per side. Good luck.

my daughter did that and I just unwrapped her so she wasn't so snug. She loves to be swaddled and when I unwrapped her she wasn't as comfy. Good luck that helps.

thanks.  i've been trying switching him side to side every time he starts to nod off.  in between each switch i gently bounce him and sing some silly song about how he's a baby that likes to bounce.  it seems to do 2 things - wake him up a bit and also make him smile.
