discipline?

So my problem is this, my son Terry is 21 months old. He is at an age now where he is doing things intentionally that he knows that he is not aloud to do. Example being, he climbs up on the couch and grabs the sconces on the wall. I know that he knows better because when I say no he will grin and do it more but the second that i start his direction, he lets go, climbs down and runs. lol. I tried putting him in "time out", which is a playpen in the living room. But that didn't work because he likes it in there. lol. Then after failed attempts with time outs, one day I tapped his hand and he laughed, and I'm not willing to smack his hand hard, so that won't work.

Because my son has no verbal communication, its hard to know exactly what he does and doesn't understand. Because of that, i tend to only say "no" and distract him from whatever he is doing, but thats not working anymore. Now he has started climbing on the kitchen table CONSTANTLY. It doesn't matter if I stand there and take him back down out of the chair 50 times, he thinks that is funny too, so he just keeps doing it. Can anyone give me any ideas?

I feel your pain Tessa!  Jaylen is almost 3 and we battle everyday!  Some days are harder than others.  The worst is, like you said, you don't really know what is being a 2 year old, what is being a boy, what is being a brat, and what is his disorder!!!  So hard.  We have a behavioral therapist, through the school, that helps out a little.  She says to really stick to the time outs.  So for you, pick a spot where Terry is not happy.  Not miserable, but unhappily confined.  Ours is Jaylen's room and we just put a baby gate up so he can't get out.  He usually cries for 2 minutes, then relaxes and plays in there for the last minute.  You are supposed to do their age in minutes for time out.  And it works for us because he gets it.  He is sad to get put there, but then does relax, which is the point really.  He gets a consequence and then chills out.

I hope that helps you out some.  Please be in touch, I know (almost) exactly what you are going through!

Thank you Jean! I will try time out in a different spot. Thanks for your reply! I will update you with the results.
