How to keep books in tip top condition?

Can anyone please tell me how to keep my books in tip top condition as if it is new?  It was to my horror to find all my old and new books pages turned yellowish and brown stains everywhere?  I dont know why?  I just kept in the book shelf.  Now I am very sad that I have to throw all my favourite books.

Where do you have these books.... are they in direct sunlight near a air conditioner vent etc... all of these things can mess with the pages or your books...

My books are kept in a bookshelf with glass door and is not under direct sunlight nor air con.  I wonder do you have such problem? If not how do you keep all your books?

Are all your 600 books look as new?  White pages?  I am very sad that all my books pages turned yellow at the edges and some yellow flecks.  I left the book shelf untouched for I have read all the books.  I really dont know why?  I still do not have clue to solve my problem.  Fear that my new book will have same problem.
