The Taste Berry
He has put a new song in my mouth praise to our God. Psalm 40:3
In Africa there is a fruit called the "taste berry." It changes a person's taste so that everything, including sour fruit, becomes sweet and pleasant for several hours after eating the berry.
Praise could be considered the "taste berry" of the Christian's prayer life. When we begin our prayers with praise to God, it suddenly takes our focus off of the negative things in our life and reminds us of all the things we have to thank God for, including His gift of salvation and forgiveness and His undying love for us. As a result, rather than asking God to remove pain, suffering, and trials from our life, we can pray that His will would be done in the midst of them.
Additionally, ending our prayers with praise shores up the fact that no matter what we are going through, He deserves all the glory and honor simply for existing, creating us, giving us loved ones and a blessed life, and being big enough to handle our greatest needs.
Try the "taste berry" of praise in your prayers and watch it transform your outlook on life.
The habit of celebrating the greatness and graciousness of God yields an endless flow of thankfulness, joy, and zeal. James I. Packer
