Kids with speech delay
Public online group

Hello

Hi, I am new to this group. I have a 2 year old daughter with a speech delay. She's been going to speech therapy for a month now. On her last visit, the therapist mentioned she might have apraxia. What is this??

hi Keely! welcome to the group. my 4 year old son has apraxia. when he was first diagnosed my best friend was www.apraxia-kids.org I got so much information that was so helpful.

to answer your question (according to apraxia-kids.org) Apraxia of Speech is considered a motor speech disorder. For unknown reasons, children with apraxia have great difficulty planning and producing the precise, highly refined and specific series of movements of the tongue, lips, jaw and palate that are necessary for intelligible speech. Apraxia of speech may also be called verbal apraxia, developmental apraxia of speech, or verbal dyspraxia. No matter what it is called the most important concept is the root word "praxis." Praxis means planned movement. So to some degree or another, a child with the diagnosis of apraxia of speech has difficulty programming and planning speech movements. Apraxia of speech is a specific speech disorder.

I know our group has several members whose little ones have apraxia. I'm sure we could all share our experiences with you. oh, yeah, take a look at our list/resources and you might find some websites that give you some helpful info too! I'm looking forward to getting to know you more. Make yourself at home around here :-)

Could this disorder be taken as autism? My sons doctor and my MIL think my son may have autism due to not talking at the age of two????????????? And he doesn't listen very well.

hmmm, I'm sure there are others in this group who could answer this better than I could as I'm very familiar with apraxia, but not at all with autism. I know non-verbal is pretty much the definition of true apraxia. I know we do have members here who do have autism.  I can tell you my 19 month old (who talks like crazy) doesn't listen very well most of the time, but I think that's just part of the age. I'd check apraxia kids for a checklist for suspected apraxia and try to find one on the internet for autism and see which one seems to fit your child best. keep us updated on what's going on, and feel free to draw from our experiences!  I'd try to get as much info on both as possibleSmile
