I had posted a few weeks ago about using baby signs. Thanks so much for all of the advice I have gotten. I went and bought a signing book and found a website for more signs.

OMG! Today I was feeding my son and he made the sign for done. Instead of the crying/fighting that usually comes at the end of his meal, he just told me. I am very impressed! I recommend signing with your baby!

That is wonderful! It must have been such an amazing feeling! My daughter is 16 weeks old, while I was pregnant I said I wanted to learn how to sign with her, however I haven't started yet. What age did you start to teach him? What books did you read? |

I started at 8 months we have been doing signs for about 2 weeks now. I only started with a few: more, food, water, milk and cookie. I am slowly adding more like done, please and thank you. Check out your local book store there are tons of signing books pick the one that fits your personality. Good Luck! |

We have also been signing. I started signing with my daughter at about eight months (eat) and she finally caught on. I bought a few books (baby board books) aimed at teaching the basic signs and she has really taken off. We also enrolled (4 weeks ago) in a class through Gymboree. She is now 12 months old and knows about 20 signs. It makes things so much easier! |

Which baby board books did you use to help you? |

We started with My First Baby Signs by Acredolo and Goodwyn (ISBN 0-06-009074-X). I bought it off of half.com. We would read it before she would go to bed and then one night she started doing the sign for fish, then hat, and now she does all the signs from that book. Actually, it is her favorite of all her books. I recently bought Baby Signs for Mealtime and Baby Signs for Bedtime (by the same authors). She loves these too and has picked up most of the signs in them; I think she likes seeing the babies in the books doing the signs.
I hope this helps! |

wow, that is so cute. I took my daughter to sign language classes they were really good to. we would sing songs and dance and she learned. she is three and still knows signs, she teaches her baby sister. you can see if the class is in your area on www.totclasses.com the book is a great idea too. |

When is a good time to start teaching a child signs? My son is 5 months...is this too early? How hard was it to get him to learn the signs and to start mimicking them? Any advice for someone who would like to try this method? |

Its totally awesome that so many parents are wanting to do this with their kids!! Im a sign language interpreter for a school for hearing impaired children in washington, and i love it. Just make sure that you're sayin the word when you sign it. and when he/she signs it, say the word for her/with her. There are tons of rumors out there about teaching babies sign delaying their abliity to learn speech, but as long as you use the speech with them, they will too!!! Congrats! |
