Issues with nipple flow

Hey everyone,

I have been trying to find some suggestions to our problem.  My 5 month old daughter uses the Born Free wide neck bottles and for sometime now she gets frustrated with the level 1 nipples although the level 2 seem way too fast for her.  Anyone had a similar issue?  Suggestions??

Thanks a bunch!

Question, do you think the level 2 nipples are too fast for her or does she react badly to them?  It may be that the level 1s aren't fast enough for her anymore and that's why she's getting frustrated.  She may like the flow of the level 2s.

My son just turned 2, so I may not be remembering completely correct, but I want to say he was up on level 2 nipples by 5 months.

I have been trying the level 2 nipples on and off for the past 2 months and the milk just comes dribbling right back out which is why I said that level 2's are too fast for her but level 1's are too slow, hence my confusion.

Have you tried making the holes on the level 1 slightly bigger?  Grab a needle from a sewing box and work the nipple hole until it's a little larger, but not as large as a level 2.

I switched my son's nipple to level 2 around 5 month.  He dribbled and gulped with level 2 which made me think it was too fast, but my son was also too frustrated with level 1, so I stuck with it.  He got used to the new flow after 10 days and moved on to level 3 around 7 month.  Of course, when I switiced to level 3, same thing all over again.  He finished 8oz. in less than 5 minutes because the flow was too fast, but again too frustrated with level 2.  He got used to new flow in about 1 week.  As long as your baby isn't choking, do what you have to do (poke a bigger hole on level 1 or stick with level 2), but don't switch back and forth level 1 & 2.  Your baby can't get used to the new flow if it's not consistent.

I agree that you should just make sure you have a burp rag in place good, and just keep on with the #2.  Just watch and make sure that she does not get choked, but at first she should get used to it.  It takes time for them to get used to it, it is new to them and they have to learn how to handle it.  My son was very big at birth, they toke him 3 weeks early because of his size.  They estimated that if they had left him, he would have weighed 12 lb. or more.  Anyway he drank with #2 from birth.
