May I ask how old is he?  Young babies usually don't interact much with other kids till they are a little older.

That is pretty normal for his age.  When he does that some times you just have to take them out of the situation for a little while.  It's hard at that age because they can't really express their feelings.  He maybe feeling frustrated about something going on or wants to be by himself.  This is normal behavior though.  Let him know (like I am sure you are :) ) that hitting isn't good and take him away from the situation for a bit and when he is more calm you can let him go back to playing.  As he gets older he will understand things more and you can explain why hitting and pushing is a no no.  I have two boys.  They are almost 9 (on Tues.) and 7 years old.  They have both went through what your son is going through and know that it does get better with time.

Maybe you can start off with a one on one play date.  Him and another little friend.  Maybe having too many kids at one time over whelms him?  Then as he gets used to other kids you can start having more kids around him.  Things do get better though :).  I hope that helps some.
