Hi all!

Hi from a stay-home dad in Queens, NYC!  I'm happy to find this group here.  I write short fiction and art criticism/review, mainly, though my big project of late is a limited-series comic book ("graphic novel" if you want to be pretentious).  That's my first attempt at full-on scriptwriting, and it's a big jump from prose.

The fact that I'm working on it while also raising a baby boy (born Sept 2 '08) and attending graduate classes to become an art teacher makes for a mighty complicated juggle right now!

Anyone else here read/write comics (not just superhero stuff, though I enjoy those too) or short stories?

Hello! Nice to meet you!

I love short stories. I admit, I'm a word junkie (I read anything - doorstopper novels, poetry, short stories, technical manuals, encyclopedias, cereal boxes :) But seriously, short stories are often very powerful, and I can fit them in better than a novel. I'm not as much into graphic novels, just because I haven't got much exposure to them. Know any good ones to start with?

Good luck with your son - mine was born a day under a year earlier than yours and he's a HUGE handful. :)

Hi,

My 13yo has been getting me into mangas. At some point we are thinking about collaborating on something. She will draw and I will write.

I start classes in the Fall towards finishing my BA in English (creative writing) and Journalism. With three kids (13, 10, and 3) it should be a real challenge. I'm also working on a novel. The writing is usually squeezed in at soccer practices or early in the morning.

I started out writing short stories but I veer more to the longer formats (novel, screen and play writing).

Nice to meet you and keep on writing.

Sandra

Thanks to you both!

Sandra, thanks for the encouragement.  What manga do you read?  I'm only passingly familiar with the newer stuff, but I love manga from the 70s and early 80s (the original AKIRA is fantastic sci-fi -- much more expansive than the movie).

Vanessa, I can recommend a zillion comics/graphic novels/sequentially-illustrated fiction/whatever you want to call them.  There are some that I highly highly recommend, but not as introductions to the form.  WATCHMEN, for example, is one of the best novels I've read, illustrated or not, but I think it barely resonates if you aren't familiar with comics.  It would be like recommending a Radiohead album to someone who'd never heard a single rock album.

What sort of fiction do you like to read?  Maybe I can find some good comics with the same themes/feels/etc...

Hi :) I just joined this group. I'm a stay at home mum in Somerville  MA. I'll be 27 in about a month (::feels old shakes off chills::) I had a son on Jan 2nd who lives with me and an almost 6 yr old daughter whom my mother has (I'm trying to get her back this summer) I write poetry.  A lot of it is strange and somewhat morbid lol but if any ones interested I'd like to share.  I'd love to read you guys' work also.   Oh and I can also write a poem on any subject thrown at me so if anyone wants me to write something for them I'm down lol its not all morbid I'm widely versatile.
