Hi! My name is Lucinda. I'm a stay at home mom of a 20 month old son. I'm almost 39. We just moved from MA to TX (Katy). I've been battling with my weight my whole life. I was overweight when I got pregnant and gained 50 lbs while pregnant. I have lost 90 lbs since having my son in October 2005. Not bad for almost 2 years of hard work! To get to my "ideal" weight, I still have 20 lbs to go. I'm 165 now and according to the charts, I should be 145 at the heighest end of the scale for my height (5'4.5"). At my SMALLEST, I wore a size 8/10 and was 145-147 lbs. I ate next to nothing and exercised over 3 hours a day. NO WAY can I maintain that eating or exercise routine now!!! I lost the majority of my weight doing weight watchers. They are wonderful. Unfortunately for me, if I'm not paying and going weekly, I'm not doing it. I can't afford to keep paying and I don't know what's wrong with me - but the minute I stop going, I stop tracking (and losing). Realistically, I want to lose another 10-15 lbs. I'll be happy with just 10 lbs. I'm wearing a size 14 now and would just like to be in a 12. I want to be HEALTHY, not rail thin.
My problem is staying motivated. For a while, I was training to do a 5k when my husband did a marathon (26.2 miles). We moved out of state and it's not feasible for me to fly back to CT to do the 5k. Now my motivation is gone. It shouldn't be, but it is. You'd think this heat would motivate me to lose so I could wear less clothes!!
I've tried getting a weight loss challenge together with family and friends but unfortunately no one takes it seriously and helps me! Any suggestions???? I
THANKS!

Lucinda! Hi and welcome to Texas!! I am sort of close to you, on the north side of Houston, here in the Woodlands. I grew up right outside of Katy, closer to Houston, off of I-10 and Kirkwood/Dairy Ashford area. Does any of that sound familiar? Probably not if you just recently moved here. I am also a stay at home mom to 2 girls, one is 16 months old and the other one is 7 years old. I will also turn 40 this year!
Congratulations on your huge weight loss so far! That is fantastic! I am with you on the motivation part. That is my biggest problem right now. I think the thing is to surround yourself with people that have the same mind set. I know that if I am around people that want to be healthy, exercise, etc. then I will also. Sounds simple, but it works for me when I stick to it. It is truly a mind set and a life style change.
There are soo many people here that have wonderful insight to weight loss, exercise and motivation. Hope that they chime in and put in their 2 cents and give you some great ideas and help.
Try not to sweat too much! It is only going to get hotter here:) Stay in touch and maybe we could get together sometime- excercise and let kiddos play together! Jennifer |

Lucinda I am glad that you have joined us allin our efforts to be healthy and fit. As I am sure you already know each persons body as an ideal weight that our bodies are comfortable at and is the best weight for us to maintain. Also if you measure your BMI withyour doctor when you are within 20-25 that is healthy and a perfect body image as my doctors have told me. I hope that you will receive the encouragement you are looking for to get on track. We are here for anything you need. Lean on us and use us however you need. Welcome again. |

Hi Lucinda! I think Weight Watchers is a great program but I couldn't afford to keep going either.
Don't ever discout the large amount you worked very hard to lose, just because the last 20 lbs or so seems difficult. You have already made huge improvements in your risk factors for diabetes, heart disease and joint problems.
I also do best when I log everything I eat: there are a number of websites that will help you track your food intake and exercise - sparkpeople.com & buddyslim.com are two I am familiar with. They are free and motivating.
It seems like your internal motivation is low, and you need external things to help you stay on track. I agree a weight challenge or just a workout buddy could do wonders for you. Check out your local community center to see if they offer free or low cost exercise programs. You might meet someone there that could help provide external motivation.
Have you checked your body fat % level? My body fat % is about 41% and I was to get it to 22% or 23%. That is a better indicator of health that even the BMI because if you carry more muscle than others you can weigh more without looking like you weigh more. And, of course, you already know about tracking measurements or clothes sizes.
Your biggest motivator might be your son. You want to be healthy enough to keep up with and enjoy him...and his kids,,,and maybe their kids! |
