need help

hello- I desperately need some 'motherly' advice. my hubby, girls and I plan on moving to Lincoln this summer and I know nothing about the city! I need some people who are willing to be brutally honest about where to live/ where not to live, what schools are good/bad, how the weather is,  what's there to do for fun, etc. People are telling us the weather is horrible and we won't like it... I reply with 'well, somehow almost 300k people live there and manage to survive!" So anyway, any advice would help! thanks

Hi Supermamma!

I moved to Lincoln in September of 2007.  My husband was recruited for a position at the University.  Prior to living in Lincoln I lived in Columbus, OH and grew-up in Chicago.  I have also lived in Indiana and Montana for college so there have been many places I have lived.

To be honest, I love Lincoln!  I would say the only downfall has been trying to make friends which is difficult with every move.  I don't know where you currently live but the weather here is great!  It is sunny almost everyday (okay today it is snowy :).

Spring lasts forever, it starts early and last until the end of May.  June, July and August are hot, hot, hot!  There is no denying that many days will be in the 90's and that there is a good amount of humidity but the summer evening are devine.

Fall also lasts forever!  From September until Thanksgiving!  The winters are somewhat mild.  There are usually a few bigger snows but the sun is always out the next day. So whatever people are saying about the weather you should ignore them, unless you are from California, then you probably have us beat!

I am pregnant with my first child so I can't speak to much for schools although I know the elementary school by my house is one of the best in Lincoln.  What are the ages of your children?

There are a lot of great neighborhodds in Lincoln.  If you are planning on buying a house I know a great realator who showed us all of Lincoln in about three days and gave us a good idea of where we may want to live.

Lincoln is a very safe city with a lot of things to do, especially with the University here.  Omaha is an hour a way and a fun place to go shopping and explore on the weekends, especially the Zoo.

I think the key is to get involved as soon as you get here and try and meet people.  I think you will find Lincoln a safe, affordable and friendly place to live.

Let me know if you want to talk directly!

If this posts twicw I'm sorry. I'm writing from my phone and I'm not quite used to it yet. Thank you ladies for your help. I am from california actually lol. Not much really happens here weather wise: but during the summer it gets into the tripple digits. When it is 90 degrees in the summer we call that a "cooler day." Sad but true. It doesn't get humid here really, so that sounds kind of yucky. Is it the kind of humid that makes you want to take a shower? How bad are the tornadoes there? They scare me a bit. My girls are 6, 3, and 8 months. Also, does anyone know anything about the lincoln housing authority apts? Are they in a nice area? What kind of ppl live in them ? Here in cali the only kind of ppl that live in housing authority apts are drug dealers and drug addicts etc. Thanks for your help.
