I have been homeschooling my daughter for two years. We can't afford private school and the public schools here in Louisiana are horrid. I find most of the information and tools I need on the internet and through the library. Our biggest obstacle is finding people her age for her to socialize with. I am disabled so this further complicates things.
We tried public school for awhile. Alanna was much more advanced then her peers which, to be honest, made me quite proud. However, I found that the public schools here are warped beyond description. They seem to be nothing but publicly funded day care centers. The teachers are overwhelmed and often, underqualified.
The biggest problem was that even at the elementary level, she encountered violence, drugs and behavior you would think you would only see on television. It was truly frightening for all of us. We decided to homeschool her not for only to better educate her but simply to keep her safe. |
