How do I wean my baby from nursing?

My doctor thinks that I should be giving my little girl (13 mths) whole milk- but she is not having it-  she is also starting to occasionally bite me because her molars are coming in and she is hurting- What am I supposed to do when she signs for milk and won't drink the whole milk?? I am not a CIO type of mom...

I will start by saying that the World Health Organization does not agree with your Dr...  Breast feeding is very healthy!  Supplement with other calcium sources if he/you are concerned, but quit nursing when you & your child are ready!   that said- I'll answer the question you really asked :)

My son never drank milk.  He JUST started & will only drink 3 oz. a day...  he's 20 months.  He does eat yogurt, cheese & icecream and I give him a daily multivitamin.  He never drank formula or used a bottle (we tried!)  he even refused pumped milk...  to wean I initially cut out daytime feedings & needed to find other ways for him to fall asleep (stroller or car).  Eventually- he got so he could nap w/o nursing.

I stopped nursing at 19 months so I could begin fertility treatments.  I quit cold turkey & do NOT recommend it unless medically necessary.  Cut out daytime 1st & then leave morning & bedtime (or whatever you both need more).  Then get down to once a day & then every other day.  It will be kinder to both of you!

I am weaning my baby from the breast as well. She would not take any bottle or formula, but then I was told about that new bottle Adiri and it is awesome. It looks like a breast and is really soft and my daughter takes it. I pump breast milk and put it in there and she will actually take it now. I recommend trying it. Unfortunately, they are expensive. I only have 1 bottle and just wash it after every use. Good luck!!

I had a difficult time with my son when my breasts ran dry... I mixed my breast milk with whole milk for a while and slowly cut down the ammount of breast milk and increased the whole milk.   I know it sounds weird but there were times when my son would not have it so I would take my shirt off and give him his bottle that way he still got his skin contact, sometimes I think that was all he really wanted.   I hope this helped.

I also had this problem with my son. I found out that if you use those old brown nipples that are latex it seems to work better. Many nursing moms told me this trick. The nipples are much softer than the plastic so more like the breast. I would also just give the bottle next to my breast so that they would have the same comfort feeling.
