My daughter is almost 11 months old, but does not have any teeth yet. She is s very good eater, but I think wants to be more independent and feed herself. I have given her bits of fruit, cereal, and crackers. I may just be overly cautious because I still chop and blend her food quite well because I am afraid she will choke. With the pieces so small she has trouble picking them up. I have offered her the spoon with food and she will sometimes try to feed herself, but she of course likes using her hands and she gets frustrated when more of the food ends up in her lap. Any suggestions on other foods I could give her good sized pieces so she can pick them up. I have tried using the netted feeding bags and she will have nothing to do with them. |

I don't know if I can help to be honest. I have a daughter almost 10 months old and she is now cutting her second tooth, but still has a hard time with finger foods. I too get paranoid because she has gagged on foods and it is very scary to witness something like that happening. I am now trying 3rd foods with her with the bigger chunks.
The only thing that I have really given her as far as finger foods are pretzel rods, gerber puffs (which she gagged on), toast (also gagged on that) and cheerios. I find that the pretzel rods are great for teething. It helps with the gums a lot and makes it easier for the tooth to make it's way through. The first time she had cheerios she didn't care too much for them, but now she likes them and for some reason she can handle those better than the gerber puffs.
I have heard moms cut up fruit/veggies into cubes and let thier babies go to town. I wish I could do that for Sienna, but I know what the outcome would be and I just don't think she is ready for certain things. I am going to keep trying with the cheerios to get her use to different textured food and take it from there.
Good luck. Children are such an adventure aren't they...

I really don't think you have to rush the finger foods, especially if your child hasn't cut teeth yet. Eating should be an enjoyable experience, not a frustrating one. I also felt the pressure to get my little guy eating finger foods around that age and he would choke and gag on them. I decided to put it off until after he had more teeth and it was a much better experience. |

My son is 9 months old and is refusing to eat baby food. Whatever we are eating he has to eat. As long as I cut it up small enough he eats it. He has also gagged on the Gerber puffs. But I bought the Meijer brand this time and no problems with those. I cut up bananas in very small pieces for him and he loves it. Why do our babies want to grow up so fast? |
