chewing issues
Hi, I have a 16 month old who has had several allergies so I was a little late intrducing "solids". I notice he is swallowing allot without chewing. His doctor suggested a "feeding team". Has anyone else experienced this?

I don't know if it is the same thing you are talking about, but my son did not chew everything he ate also. Things like mac and cheese he would hardly chew and then just swallow it. There were other things also. He also went through a thing for a very short time period that I had to occasionally go back to giving him baby food. If he had to chew it he would refuse it. If he could just swallow it he would eat. I then noticed that he was teething and he has kind of been the same since with teething, of course. His gums were hurting some so he wanted foods that he could just swallow or chew very little. Like now still he sometimes prefers oatmeal or yogart over eggs. Again I don't know if this is simular to what you are talking about or not.

We had therapy, mine chews but won;t swallow, so she basically is getting all the nutrients from pediasure and resource boost drink. Your problem has a more direct solution, just a matter of patient and work. He needs a speech therapy which work with kids and feeding problems. They could actually work with your kid by teaching how to chew properly, and they could even just give you tips/techniques to work at home and then they won't have to have weekly sessions with him. Try to give him like a french fry or a pretzel (the long sticks) and hold it on the side of his mouth (by his molars) let him try to chew it. (I know it is difficult, mine doesn't let me get close to her mouth at all) Maybe yours will let you do it. When you eat show him how you chew and swallow. Give him lots of crunchy stuff, like cherios, long cookies, long pieces of rice cereal, and with this long foods do the chewing on the side technique. His Speech therapist will have more tips for you.

I see the speech therapist every 3 months, she gave us some tips to work at home for the chewing (when she wasn't chewing, although a few days later before we started the techniques she started to chew). But now in my case it is difficult because there is too little to control how a baby swallows what chews. Once the food is in her mouth I can control what she does with it. So they told me is a matter of wait and see, she needs to get rid of the fear of chocking.

I was also late introducing her to chunky food, basically around 12 months I gave her #3 gerbers, then by 15 months she finally "ate" cheerios, french fries, etc (chew but won't swallow), and we are still working on the swallow.
