Intro to solids and balance with breast milk I just started my daughter on rice cereal a few weeks age (she is 6 mos.). I am also nursing and am not sure how often all of this needs to take place. We start the day with about 3 tbsp of rice cereal and milk and also a little nursing, she nurses again in about 3 hrs, in the afternoon I have been trying green beans and then nursing, and before bed I give her another 3 tbsp of rice cereal. She wakes one time during the night for a full 20 min nurse. I don't know how much milk she gets so I am curious if I am balancing this well. Her nursing times vary from 5 min to 20 min. This new venture has left me feeling unsure about nutrition but she is a healthy weight and doesn't seem hungry or too full. Any experiences or advice you all have to share would be greatly appreciated!!! THANKS |

Wow - sounds like she is taking to the introduction well. It is hard when breastfeeding to know how much they are actually getting. My daughter is almost seven months and is not taking to food at all. She gets irritated when I try to give her anything else. She will tolerate a little oatmeal, but the few vegetables we have tried so far she will barely taste before she gets mad. She has always been a stubborn baby - I breastfeed her and it took about two months when we tried to introduce a little formula so my parents could watch her for awhile. I am concerned as well about her getting enough to eat. But she lets me know when she is hungry - I think she holds out to nurse! She also still wakes at night to eat.
It sounds like she is happy - so take your cues from her. She will let you know if she needs more. Maybe your doctor would have some insight. Good luck! |

Sounds like she is doing great. I think you will know if she is wanting or needing more. My son started solids at 4 months, I wanted to wait until 6 months as he too is breast fed, but he is a big, big boy and was ready for the addition of solids. He let me know quickly that he wanted more and more and more cereal etc. He is now 9 months and eats three jars of food and cereal twice a day and still nurses about every 3 hours or so. Babies are so different, wouldn't it be nice if they came with instructions specific to them. I think you are doing just fine with her eating. |

All pediatricians will tell you something different, but mine said that once you begin solids, you should be feeding 2-3 tbsp for the first few weeks and gradually introduce foods. We are making our own baby food and it is so easy. It is best to start with veggies, as most babies will prefer the sweetness of the fruits. When my son was 6 mos, I started with rice cereal for the 1st week and then I introduced carrots once per day, for a week or two and then introduced new veggies. Once he experienced multiple veggies, we introduced fruits and now proteins (either pureed meats, legumes, lentils, or egg yolks). At 8 mos, he nurses in the morning (7ish), then nurses 3.5 hrs later and eats rice cereal in the late morning, nurses, then fruit and veg for lunch, nurses then fruit and veg or protein for dinner. I also nurse him one last time before bed and he will sleep for 10-11 hrs. He has slept through the nite since he was 3 mos. old and I've read that if your baby is 6 mos.+ and still waking in the nite, that it is not because they are hungry. Apparently it is more for comfort. Maybe you'll find as you feed her more solids that she will ditch that middle of the night feeding. Good luck!!! |
